37's on stock axles

I've been running 37's on stock axles for sometime now. The other day I ran into a fellow jeeper and we were disscussing things that we've done to our jeeps.... he was surprised that I've had such good luck with the 37's on stock axles....... should I be concerned?

Front differential Dana 30 / Rear differential Dana 44

 

There was a thread or two a short while back that discussed this subject. The general feeling is that anything over 33" is a bit much for stock axles, assuming more than just a daily driver. I think the issue was broken u-joints at the wheel mostly.

 

Anything is possible. If you are not super tough on gear then it can be done. Though I would be prepared to break stuff.

 

I've blown up parts of both stockers on 33"s, but if its been working for you, then its fine. Run it till you have to change.

As stated above, a lot depends on your driving style. I was told, and have seen it written in many mags, that you can't ecpect a D30 to hold up with 35's. I put in some Alloy USA axles in my D30 and haven't had any issues with 35's. But, I don't hammer it hard when I can't get up something. I just pick a better line. I've run the Rubicon numerous times as well as Barrett Lake and Fordyce and never broke anything. I'd say don't worry, but you might want to have spare U-joints with you or front axle shafts if you can. By the way, the Alloy USA axles have D44 size u-joints and shafts. All you really have to worry about with those is your ring and pinion.

I have a friend who runs 37's on his 5 and has for years. He knows how to drive his rig and knows when to stay off the skinny pedal. But man that thing will go like a tank.

How much lift do you have? doesnt look like much. I dig it!

 

Yes those are TSL's.... I have approx 3" of lift with the Holbrook LongLeafs. I was going to do the SOA thingy but decided I liked the low wider profile, so I put some bump stops in place to minimize the up-ward travel, everythings seems to work well.

 

How do the Holbrook springs work for you? I've been wanting to try those, but the price is pretty steep for my budget.

Ive used stock axles and big tires and never a problem. Ive run 40s with a stock model 20 rear and never broke. i think the right gearing helps alot. I get told all the time to run it till it breaks!

How well does it stop?

 

My jeep is used just for local travel in a very rural area, stopping at lights is not a issue.

 

Here's a couple of pics before bump stops or any cutting done with the 37"s. Also colojeepguy, you can see in the one picture the extended Leaf spring hanger for the Holbrook Leafs... I really like them.

 

agree, anything is possible. depends on how you four wheel, or drive it, but i wouldnt want to four wheel with them myself. ive been running 33's with my stock 10 spline axles, lockright in rear and powerloc in front, for almost 20 years, couple weeks back i thought id hotrod it on the street, well now i have new axles in the rear, broke the drivers side, its the longer of the two, and twisted the passengers side. i can go to 35's with no problem myself, i still have the 5:38 gears but a warn overdrive, but dont want to chance it. again depends on how you drive it.

 

A 30 can survive with 37s, have friend that has been running it for a 5+yrs, maybe longer.
On the other hand I've seen one break on it's first run.
The trick is smooth driving and not putting it into a bind. Once it's bound up and the HP is added something has to give, what is the weakest link?
