My brother has a 79 cj-5 that we are building. I was wondering if anyone knew the axle width of the amc 20 rear end and front dana 30? We were considering swapping in earlier running gear from a 72 up era cj-5 for the dana 44 instead of building the amc 20. Are these dana 44 axle housing from the 72 up era cj-5 the same width as a 79 amc 20? Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank You.

45" inside of brake back to inside brake back. 29.5" is outside of spring to outside of spring. these are from my 74 with a centered D44. you should be able to measure and see if this would work for your aplication.

Thank You. I'll measure the 79 axles and see if the earlier ones are a bolt in. Just looking for options before we decide to regear the stock axles.

Your narrow track AMC 20 rear and the '72-'75 is dang close in wms to wms. You will have to move the spring pads on the 44 though as your '79 frame is wider and the spring pads need moved outward. The front 30 will be the same width. Spring mounting pad center to center is 27 1/2" on both.
