what's up with my clutch?

    Here are the symptoms for my '66 cj5 when I pulled it out for a ride this weekend:
    1. Lots of resistance-free travel in the clutch pedal - I normally have resistance within the first few inches of travel. Now it's probably six inches to meet resistance.
    2. As a result, it will go into first gear but not as clean as normal; second and third are fine.
    3. This seems to have happened immediately - no slow degradation of clutch. I swear two weekends ago it was fine.
    4. This jeep only gets weekends work, putting around on roads - doesn't get clutch abuse off-road.

    Thanks for any help before I go see the mechanic.

    You need to post some specifics about your rig.
    engine = 4 or 6 or something else.
    clutch = stock?
    clutch peddle control = hydraulic, cable, chain, rod?
    and anything else you can think of to help diagnose...

    X2 FTW!

    If its a 4 or 6, and is stock - i would venture to point you to the linkage between the clutch pedal and the clutch bellcrank....if it is that, i highly recommend building the Heim Joint linkage posted on the technical section of the main site.
