My son has started college. He's following in his old man's greasey footsteps and going to "Johnson College", (Johnson Technical School when I went there, decades ago. A school first opened for vets).
His shop is looking for things to do.:D
I thought I let him take my jeep in and let them look at "Old School" technology.
You know set the dwell, ("Dad, what the hell is dwell"??):?
    Set the toe.
But more importantly, take my dist. and check the TOTAL advance.
I'm gonna thing 45 degrees with the mechanical and vacum, (weights like total 25 degrees, vacum for the rest).
I haven't look in my shop manuls for the EXACT spec on this, (if listed), but I KNOW the vacuum diagram isn't in any, nor on the hood.
Can someone tell me, so I can look like I KNOW what I doing:D
Is the vacum advance ported off the carb or is like the Ford, manifold, (vacum at idle) ?????
I'm almost sure it ported off the carb, (0 at idle, vacum as you open the throttle), but AMC used many Ford things as time went on.
Thanks for making me look smart!

As my boys get older it harder to WOW! them! Now, they just come to me for "sage" advice, like in the movies when the leading man goes to the cave to ask the wrinkled up old dude the meaning of life and the old dude just give the guy riddles, (to get even with him cuz the leading man always get the HOT chick and the old guy get roots and berries)!:(

    nickmil In mothballs.

vacuum advance should always be run off ported vacuum except in some odd circumstances. Ported comes in as the throttle plates open and venturi vacuum increase and engine rpm increases. This is when you want vacuum advance to come in. If you hook it to manifold vacuum it's maximum when the throttle plates are closed, like idle, then decreases as the throttle plates open. Just backwards of the way you want it.

    Edited. Fixed my mistake.

The dist whether Delco or Prestolite on the 225 will be ported (carb) advance. The specs on the dist are very well hidden in my FSM or not there at all. As for total advance I run 32*. Dwell is 29 +/-3 *. I run about 15-16* mechanical and the rest vacuum. Don't know if you have the adjustable type vacuum advance or not but mine (one I had on the shelf) is not adjustable and was was advancing too far. On the pull arm of the vac unit where it turns up to fit into the hole on the breaker plate you can slide a small piece of tubing over it to limit the amount of travel which will control the amount of advance. Changing the spring tention on the weights gives you control of where your power curve is coming it. A round file in the slot under the weights will give you control of max mechanical advance. My 225 has good power at hole shot and also no complaints on cruising speed and my temp is running about 190 at long idle and it drops a quarter of the gauge while cruising in the summer. HTH.

I THOUGHT it was ported, but you never know.....
The ford had manifold vacuum, (at least I remember the trucks did. I'd install a vacuum delay to the line to get a stumble outta it)
I should have noted my old girl is a 232 straight 6 banger.
I won't say a word, (yet) let's see how good the instructor is and how deep he makes his kids dig for info.
When I went there, I HAD to find ALL the info, the instructor would drill me.
I kinda afraid to let a bunch of "rookie" jump into my jeep, and my jeep is also afraid.
