More than likely the alternator is going south and not producing enough amps to run the engine and all the lights, mine would run the lights a little dimmer than normal but when you turned the wipers on something would quit.

Have you checked your voltage regulator to see if it is putting out a stable 12-13 volts, its possible that you have a short but if the regulator is going bad it might not be stable enough. Are your lights cutting out completely or just getting real dim? If the lights are cutting off completly then a short somewhere is a good possibility.

Does it happen with the Jeep not running?

Do you have to keep replacing a fuse? If so, what gauge fuse and where is it located?

The headlight/brights wires are either shorted or drawing too much juice for the fuse. Might be good to inspect the wiring from the switch. Yank the neg. battery terminal, unscrew the light switch from the dash, drop it down, and inspect. Replace neg. batt terminal and do some testing with a test light around the switch in all positions (for example, pull knob out so only parking lights come on, then hit the turn signal & depress the brake. Any blow? If not, you've eliminated all but headlights &/or brights). Trace wiring thru the firewall all the way to the front junction block. Inspect wiring for breaks (especially at the firewall). If you have a foot-activated brights switch, inspect those connections/ground also.

If you get that far, remove front headlight connections, then test to see if it's the headlight/bright load. then replace one at a time, retest. Something ugly should rear their ugly head eventually. Just be sure to have a bunch of fuses handy. :D Good luck!!

May be bad grounds. Make some jumper wires from some 14 ga wire and substantial aligator clips. Ground the grille (or even the headlight buckets) direct to the neg post of the battery. If that cures the problem, you'll need to create some permanent grounds.
    Batt neg to block
    Block to frame
    Grille/fenders to frame
    tub to frame
Also make sure that the switch body is properly grounded.
    Let us know...

I don't know if this is what you're experiencing or not but it might be helpful anyway. I had a problem with my 56 and the headlights going out when I let out the clutch to get moving and also when I shifted. After checking everything over real good I decided to run a separate ground from the frame to the grill and that solved it. The grill flexed just enough upon letting out the clutch and at initial shift points to cause a grounding problem.
