I have found a 46 CJ2A that I would like to pick up and restore. My question is, how many of the mechanical components will swap over from my CJ5 to the CJ2? The 2 has a much better frame and body (I would rather have a flattie anyhow) but my 5 only has 39K on the engine and running gear. I would also like to know if I can take the head from the 46 and put it on the block of my 64. I don't think my 64 motor will clear the hood on the 46 in stock trim? I figure that between the two I can end up with a nice Jeep. Thanks for the feedback.

running gear will swap. only change is rear drive shaft will need to be shorter due to wheelbase differences (81 on the 5 and 80 on the flatie).

    the 46 is probably a flathead (L-head) 4 cylinder
the 64 should be the overhead (F-head) 4 cylinder
the cylinder heads are not interchangable
the 64 engine will bolt right in the 46, with the carb clearance issue you have noticed; options are hole in hood with hood scoop, or early Ford Bronco 1bbl Holley carb which you then might be able to adapt your old air horn for air cleaner
If your flattie hood is good/cherry, look around for one that has already been cut, they are out there believe me. no sense in ruining another good hood
    my thoughts

Sheet metal is cherry and I have no intentions of ever cutting it! Just trying to figure out how to use my low mileage running gear.

Ya - what JP said. Out of all my jeeps and spair parts I only have 2 hoods that have not been cut. If you want to cut one - let me know and I'll happily swap you.

Side draft carb. Carter YH maybe?

Saw it at Jeff City this fall and the 3B page mentions it as well.

Actually there was a factory retro-fit kit to put an F head, head, on an L head. Old man down the road told me about it.
There is an artcle on the CJ3B page about how to fit a F head under a CJ2A hood w/o cutting the hood.

    I like flatties too! ;)

Is the L-head still in it? If so, I would stick with it for originality. Many people have never seen a flat head and it is a real novelty when you pop the hood! 10 HP difference between the engines IIRC. A heavier flywheel will give the L-head a boost in momentum too!

After Tellico, I was impressed with the L-head.

would be next to impossible to accomplish!
(I guess with enough money and time, nothing is impossible)
wonder where those push rods are going to go?
and the extra set of valves, that you now won't need?
not to mention water passages, oil feed line for the head etc.......

Sorry my mistake. I called and he was talking about a high compression head for the L that gave it the power of an F. He told me that there was a kit to mount a F head carb on the L head too.
Never played w/ an F head before but I'll know soon as I'm buying one w/ a possibly cracked block. Gonna strip it all down and see for myself and compare it w/ my stripped MB block.

Some L blocks had a funny habit of cracking between #2 and #3 cyl. Hairline cracks, they open up when the engine is hot and cause boil-over...
