I have an 84 cj7 with a 258, T-5, dana 300 all stock. I just picked up an 80 cj5 with a 304, t-176, dana 300,, I would like to have the bigger 304 and t-176 in the cj7, and then put the 258 t-5 in the cj5,,,would this be a fairly easy swap? Would I have to change much? Motor mounts, etc? ,,,, Thanks for the help.

I'm not 100% but I think that it's a pretty easy swap... Motor mount brackets ashould be in the same place and all, you might have to do a bit of wrangling with transmission crossmemebers but I think it should be fairly straight forward.

I can never remember which but one of the frame mounts is different, drivers side?? I believe. I'd look it up but I'm just into my second cup of :coffee: so I'm not quite into the "looking up stuff" mode yet :D.

You would need to change the passenger side frame motor mount and fuel line. The t5/300 is a couple inches longer then the t176/300 so there will be drive shaft changes as well.

A 258 t-5 in the cj5 you are looking at a seriously short driveshaft

What's the power difference between the 2 motors? Will the payoff of having a v8 in your '7 be worth the work, even through this swap is easier than some others?

The 304 t-176 feels better to drive,, more power, I like the 4 speed better also and the 7 is the one I drive the most and is in way better shape,, so where do I find the correct motor mount?

Use the 80 304 mount in the 84 and the 84 six mount in the 80.

Hello, I just went to a local four wheel drive shop and they took one off one of the jeeps sitting out back. you could order one out of a catalog,(quadra tec, 4whellwholesellers). I did this swap about 10-11 yrs ago. I had no experience at doing that kind of thing, and the swap was simple. There is a difference in the wiring though, coil hook up i think,(if I remember correctly) there is one wire that is dif. we couldnt figure it out so I put in points
distributor in place of the electronic.(did that backwards didnt I) fired right up. huge differance in power. The fuel lines on the v-8 are on the passenger side of the frame and the 6 is on the drivers (or visa versa). easy fix though, just route it the the other side of the frame. I think you will love it once you swap it.. good luck

    :iagree: :iagree:

It seems that later 304's didn't give much more, if any more power than the 258's due to emissions...just kinda sound tougher. :) Have you thought about a 360 instead?

More power for the same amount of work.

A 360 would be good but I already have the 304 and it seems to have decent power, quite a bit more than the 258,, thinkin about seeing what kind of cam is in it, maybe slip an rv cam in?

cam up and 4 barrel your 258.......I think you would be surprised in it!

Personally I think the 258 is a better motor than the 304
