    Hey guys,

    I have a issue that i need advice on. The rear half of my frame is quite rusty, the rear frame rails are quite thin in spots and the crossmember over the rear axle is starting to rust through. I don't want to buy a replacement frame or swap over to a used frame because every one around here has the same issues. Plus i want to cut down on the frame flex a bit. its cracking the mounts on my fiberglass tub.

    As far as i see it i have two options.

    1) the first option is to plate the sides of the frame strap the top and bottom and box it in. This would give me the strength back.

    2) Cut the frame off behind the front shackle mounts. Rebuild the rear with 4x2x.188 rectangular tube.

    I am really stuck on which way to go. I think they will be the same amount of work in the long run.

    Future plans for the jeep are to run 33's with a t18 swapped in. Going for a resto mod look. I would DD the jeep on nice days, light wheeling, and driving around on dirt roads.

    Whats the forums' opinion on this?

    Thanks,
    Andy

    i would go on the second option and start with a good base....you may box it but it will be just a temporaly job...change the part of the frame for new one is better...a t18 will bring more force thru you frame (especialy in first gear) so if you frame is weak this wont help....

    for youre fiber glass tub , to minimise the flex over it i've put one quarter plate between youre support.

    Also strongly agree with second option with suggestion for additional gusset material around any support arms... always remember the weld bead is the strongest locale and the weakest is the adjacent material... thus, the adjacent areas to wear designedl gusset material (triangular, square and/or rectangular) to contribute support for additional torque the right foot commands.

    Further suggestions;
    Regarding the fiberglass body attachment with frame locations. A CJ5 friend has added small aluminum plating on inner and outer areas to reinforce the body to frame attachment... had found the 2" washers were NOT sufficient and then fabricated and utilized additional 3" to 5" square to round and otherwise designed support pieces to keep his fiberglass from cracking while off-road... he also beveled the edges within the cabin floorboard areas....

    Thanks gunner,
    I was planing on modeling it up in solid works and running a FEA of the frame in torsion.

    Btw I just graduated with a MET degree last week!
