Long story short, my rear of the tub was rotted around the tailgate opening and the seams by the tail-lights, so I stole Posi's idea and made a solid panel for the rear, and fabbed up a frame out of 1x1 square tubing I had kicking around.

Anyway, I'm going to mount a heavy spare on the back, and am going to add some uprights to the 1x1 frame, but don't know where abouts to put them.

So if someone could measure from say the pass side inner wheel well to the closest set and farthest set of the bolts that hold the carrier to the rear that would be fantastic!!

    Thanks in advance!!

I have an A1, but its at the farm currently so I can't measure...but what tailgate? If memory serves, the rear panel supports go from the support inside the top of the panel down to the floor above one of the tub mounts.

I had tub issues and spare mount woes as well. Mine was wrecked sometime in the early 70's if I had to guess and it was squared very well and straightened using a LOT of bondo. I ditched the bondo through hours with a wire brush on my grinder. I bought a Warrior wrap around tub protector and attempted to fit it. I found that the tub was a 1/2" narrower than the wrap so I cut it along the same line as the factory seam for the rear panel and welded it back together. I did this twice on each side which removed 1/8" kerf on each pass for a 1/2" removal of material. I then used the factory spare mount with a 2 1/2" spacer to clear my 33 10.50 on a 15x8 rim. Maybe that will help with some ideas as you move along.

I have a couple 38a1s in the woods- i will look for you tomorrow. Both are solid rears though, no tailgates.

I think he has a CJ-5 tub and is trying to emulate the M38a1 solid back panel...

3 1/4 and 9 1/4. That's from inner fender to the center line of each support.

The M38-A1-C variant (106mm recoilless rifle) had an open tailgate.

The opening is exactly right for a a standard CJ5 tailgate, which I have done by adding hinges and chain holders.
