junkyard seat/seatbelt ideas

I've been thinking about makeing a Pull-A-Part run to find some retractable 3 point seat belts and that got me thinking about highback seats. The question to the group is what works in a stockish CJ5? Any tips? They wouldn't have to be a direct bolt in because I need to fab up some mounts anyway. I guess what I'm wondering is, are there any "tried and true" solutions that are a good fit with good back and neck support and not too out of character for a CJ5? Also what seatbelt doners would I want to be on the lookout for? Thanks for any pics also.

aallison 74 cj6, 76 cj5. Has anyone seen my screwdriver?

Mustang seats. Lots of info out there. But if you need to make something to make it fit, I'd just buy the seats you want and feel comfy and then make them fit.

Dave, check out my thread on the seats I bought out of Pull-A-Part.

The cool thing is that I've seen the same style seats up to the mid-80's Dodge vans, including in a high back style.

I also pulled some seatbelts from a full size Wagoner. The rear belts work fine, but the front retractable don't quite fit right unless you mount them differently. The retractor ends up at an angle and work retract when using the original mounting hole in the CJ. I've also looked at F150 belts and think they would probably be good to try.

I just put 3pt belts in that I bought through 4wheel drive hardware. $ 150 with store pick up. New. I put them into my 67 cj5 with the factory low back seats and had my local weld guy put the sleeve into the roll bar and attach them. The manufacturer is Beam i believe and the mechanisim does not have to be exactly straight up and down to work. Nice feature since there is a slight angle using the factory mounting holes. Looks factory and works. At some point if I go to a high back seat the belts should work fine. I like access to the under seat tool box so I want a high back that would still allow that.

I bought these same belts 5-6 years ago and they still are working great. I looked at the junkyard belts and decided against them, as didn't like the ones I found at the time. Not to mention the the unknown with 30+ year old belts.

I'm going to see if I can make these work. Scrubing down the old velour was like scrubing down an old dog but they cleaned up nicely. I am going to try black Simply Spray upholstery dye on the fabric and SEM flexible color coat on the pleather back and sides. I think these will work well because they are pretty comfortable and thin enough to alow me to mount them back a little farther.

got mine from a saab 900 i think. they fit absolutely perfect. Just had to break the little weighted lock in the retractor because it wasnt mounted at the intended angle on the wheel well.

I used seat belts/retractors from a '79 Subaru wagon. Worked great. I bolted the shoulder anchor to the roll bar, just drilled through, didn't sleeve.... probably should have to maintain original roll bar strength.

The retractors used to lock up when offroad because I mounted them on the front sloped portion of the wheelhouse.

Then I learned a trick from Snowtow on another forum, and it worked very well. Mount the retractors on top of the wheelhouse, attached to the roll bar. This keeps the retractor vertical and working as designed.
Here are some pics I borrowed from Snowtow... I used these pics to build identical retractor mounts on the '71 by using some strap steel welded to some muffler clamps...
