My '62 CJ5 came with just a few carburetor issues one of which is no check ball and weight in the accelerator system. The kit I bought from O'reilys is of course the generic one size fits all variety. It came with two balls, one steel and one aluminum and no check ball weight. I found the weight at Mikes Carburetor Parts.
The question I have is which ball to use. The steel one is slightly larger than the aluminum one. My search turned up several comments about the check ball and weight but not which one should be used.
    As always help is appreciated.

These get lost when people turn the carb upside down and don't realize the check valve has fallen out.

As I recall the stock ball is steel. I once replaced a missing weight with a short length of brass rod. Worked fine.

I have installed the steel one. I hope that is right.
    Thanks,

I stand corrected regarding the steel ball. Thanks!

I found this by searching on-line...

"Install the pump discharge check ball and weight.
Make certain that the pump discharge check ball seats properly.
Fill the pump discharge passage with gasoline. Use an oil can and clean gasoline.
Fuel should remain visable in the passage above the discharge check ball for 60 seconds.
If the ball check does not seat satisfactorily or if the discharge ball or seat appear damaged,
form a new seat by tapping on an 1/8" stainless steel ball with a 5/32" brass drift and light hammer.
Remove the stainless steel ball and insert new 116-25 aluminum ball. Do not tap on aluminum ball.
Then install retainer ring. Make sure discharge check ball seats in casting as a leak at this point will result in poor acceleration."

Also, be aware generic kits may provide a float valve with a too large orifice for an F-head. This can result in excessive pressure and flooding unless a fuel pressure regulator is added to the system.

    I appreciate the feedback.
The service bulletin on the 3B page lists YF carburetors #'s 738, 768, and 832.
I have been afraid to do the procedure shown until I am sure it is the same for a 938.
    Thanks,
    Tommy

Go to the CJ-3B Bulletin Board and enter "Carter YF Rebuild" via the top (upper) SEARCH function.

    Thanks,
I have read the info on the YF rebuild on the 3B page. I am now leaning toward using the aluminum ball. I will measure it tomorrow to see if it is 1/8" like the steel ball and do the leak test with the weight installed and see what happens.

I measured today. The aluminum ball is 1/8" and the steel ball is about 2/64" larger. All of the information says use a 1/8" aluminum ball so that is what I'll use. It did not hold carb. cleaner for the full minute but I think the seal should be OK when a little vacuum is applied.
    Thanks for all the help.
