All the recent talk about the strength of the 27, etc., has me wondering. Are the internals of the 30, the case and carrier, bearings, axle shafts, etc., stronger than those in the 27? How about the axle tubes? I've never had a problem with my 27's and intend on keeping them. I'm just curious, I guess, if there are other advantages to the swap besides the tighter turning radius of the slightly wider, open knuckle design.

The tubes are typically thicker, the obvious open knuckle design, 27 spline inner and outer shafts which tends to distribute the load around the shaft better. I've seen some 30 shafts that were about the same diameter along their length as the 27 and some that are definitely larger. I suspect the larger ones were a bit later. Pressed through Studs instead of bolts to hold the spindles on, iirc larger carrier bearings but I'd have to double check that. I want to say the pinion gears (spider gears) and shaft are a little larger but again I'd have to compare them as its been a while.

Hmmmm. So there are other advantages besides the obvious ones. Maybe I'll tear one of these 30's apart next to a 27 and compare. I wish :)roll:) I had the $ to have a 44 built to ECJ5 width. But, as I said, I have yet to hurt a 27.

I want a TruTrac for the front of mine and disc brakes which is why the 30 is appealing to me. Can't get a TruTrac for the 27. I also got Chrome Moly axle shafts cheap as well.
