I have a d18 transfer case mated to a t98 four speed. prior to installing the the tranfer case I replaced the rear output shaft seal. I did not add or remove any shims. The vehicle has only about 15 hrs on the seal but it has developed a pretty substantial leak. I will be checking end play tomorrow. I am running 90 weight oil. Other than a bad seal from the manufacturer any ideas of why its leaking?

Did you put RTV (Black) around the splines of the shaft and under the flat washer before torquing (150 lb ft) the yoke nut?

Also check the yoke for pitting or grooves as that will tear up a seal quick. Make sure the garter spring did not pop off the seal during installation if equipped. I put the sealer on the splines inside the yoke so it kind of smears along the splines as it's installed. Works well for me.

Thanks, I heard from others to use RTV on the seals and washer. A buddy also said to check the vent. If the vent is clogged the pressure will blow the oil out the shaft. The only negative point regarding that is nothing is blowing out the front.

The oil will come from the weakest seal, not always from all the seals. Your buddy is right, check the vent as well.

It appears that the oil is getting past the seal. Nothing is getting up the splines. off to check the vent It was hard to tell if the spring fell off during installation

There is a smooth groove worn in the yoke. How deep does have to be to cause issues?

Any grooving can cause an issue. Speedy sleeve time.

Yeah fortunately I have a yoke with no wear on it. Ordered a new seal. The guy at the bearing shop measured the grove and said it was a 1000th deep

If there's a groove, it will leak, even 1/1000.

That is only embarrassing if you don't ask, you know. I'll have to look it up myself.

We talking about the seal that you insert after mounting the e-brake hardware?

Book says apply sealant to the outer edge of the output seal, and that the lip faces inward. Put clean chassis grease in the recess in seal lip.

Doesn't say anything about a spring. Page 280 of Ludel's Early CJ Rebuilder's Manual.

Or calling Advance Adapters, all though I am not sure how they would help.

The spring is internal. It provides a force against the rubber to hold shape with the shaft. Never found packing with grease necessary on a seal in a gearbox.

Maybe it is just for ease of installation?

But, what way does the seal go?

The rear output seal on my Dana 18 is installed with the cup facing the front of the vehicle. I'm not sure it would be easy to drive it in otherwise. It appears to be the original seal and it leaks like crazy.

Garter spring faces in. I've had them pop off during installation and leak. That's why The service info says to pack them. Since I've been packing them I've not had one come off. Easy and cheap insurance.
