Door, Top Questions?

I am starting to think about the doors and top. I like the little cab versions. I was wondering if a set of doors, a bikini top and a windjammer makes a decent semi-enclosure? Maybe enough to keep "most" of the rain off of me?

How do the doors fit up to the bikini tops?

I haven't seen a nice half cab soft top for an ECJ5. The later ones for CJ7's, YJs and TJs are nice and are weather tight.

 

My observation on a bikini top is that it does not come down the sides far enough so you would have a gap at the top of the doors. I used to have a bikini top and 1/2 doors and got soaked. But even with real doors I think you would need the real thing.

 

When I first built my 75, that is exactly what I did before we got a new top. Worked ok, you may want to find or fab some windshield extenshion to fill the gap between the door and windshield. A good heater helps too.

 

Thanks..Rusty would you have any pictures of that set up? What did you do for the vertical rods (on the full tops) where the door handle catches?

 

No picts. of that but all it was were two pcs. of flat steel bolted to tub to make a latch. Worked good.

 

I used to have an old "fast back" best top, it sloped down from the front bow to the rear edge of the tub. This was done as a cheap alternative, you sacrificed most of the space in the tub. It did not have a rear bow. Is that what you mean by soft top half cab?

As far the doors go, the newer Tiger Tops have a latch that is attached to the door edge cut out on the jeep, so you do not need the the door frame pieces from the top to use the doors. These are full doors, not half. I don't know if they make the super top half doors for earlys. The full doors will not "seal" against the bikini top, but it will keep some of the rain off of you. If you are not covering the rear of the "half cab" created by the bikini top/door combo, you will still get wet when the wind wraps around and blows the rain back in.

 

The half cab set up's are more like a truck cab, straight down at the roll bar. Think I need to find some door frames and play around with it a bit.

 

texis, i've done that same thing you are talking about. i use my bikini top with my two piece doors and is open in the back. it keeps you drier than with no doors but sometimes you get a little water and spray while driving because of the aerodynamics of the jeep.

 

you could find a good canvas shop and make a piece with a window in it to attach to the roll bars and bring it to the floor.

 

I was thinking the same thing, I'm pretty good with fiberglass and might fab a lightweight rear bulkhead with a window that rolls around on each side to fit to the doors? Place it in there, tie-wrap it to the roll bar and take it out after winter. Just need "something" to keep the most of the rain out at the deer lease.

I have only seen the windjammer pieces for late model cj? I assume they would fit OK in one of our early models?
