I'd gotten tried of welding and re-welding frame cracks at the very rear end of my '68 frame rails. A lot of you know what I'm talking about. If you don't, get a bright light and crawl up under there. If it's an old stock frame you probably have cracks.

I cut about the last 6" off the frame ends. I had some 2" X 4"x .120" steel tube. The shackle brackets were still in good shape so I ground them off the old frame ends and welded on the new tube. The flat plate on the end will bolt through the rear cross-member and into my beefy custom bumper so there will be no twisting.

Looks great! I've got a similar issue with a GPW frame. Would you know the inside dimension of the 2x4? I think the cj frame might be a bit wider or thicker, not sure.

    Great job!

RedWing, the inside dimension would be 1-7/8" X 3-7/8". The CJ frame is smaller. I used 2x4 because that is what I had lying around. Actually it is an advantage as it allowed the top and bottom welds to be offset.

Fantastic! Thank you. My Jeep is a couple hours north, I'll pick some up before I head north.

now THATS a beefy spot to hang a bumper... i need to replace my x-member and was thinking of something like that...

in fact, i was thinking of eliminating the x-member all together and using my bumper in its place.. i like your idea of the wing plates off the sides of the frame

    very cool

TexasBlues, don't get rid of your rear crossmember. You've got 4 body mounts there. I just thru bolted them all. Bumper bracket, crossmember & frame end plate. Yeah it's beefy. Needs to be, I've so much crap hanging off the back of my jeep.

    Looks good Joe.

I had the same issue on the '71. I cut out the bad and rebuilt the framerail end with individual flat plates, adding captured nuts inside for bolting on the shackle hanger and crossmember. Then welded in a u-shaped piece of 3/16 over the rail ends.

My crossmember/bumper combo was a piece of 4x4x1/4 square tube.

I like your approach to this common problem Joe; I wish I had seen your write-up before I rebuilt the '71 frame rear.
