I have been using this site and its endless supply of knowledge for about a year know, and yet this is my first post because my questions had already been answered. I have a 1973 CJ5 I am slowly but steadily working on. Since January I have put in a new Harness (EZ wire), HEI Distributor, Alternator, Starter, Flywheel, Clutch, and U Joints. All with much help from all of you. Finally I have a question.

I have a loud wining/rattling noise coming from what seems to be the transmission. I have a T 14 and Dana 20 TC. I have replaced the U-joints thinking that was the problem, but the noise is still there. The wining noise only gets loud when I am in high second and third gear. When I let off the gas the noise is really noticeable. All of the oil has been changed so, all of the oil is at the right level and new throughout the Jeep. I am needing help or some suggestions on where the noise could be coming from, or if someone has had the same problem. People just tell me that the Jeep is old and it is going to make noises, but I don't think that that is a good answer. Any Advice will be helpful, and thanks again for all the help thus far.

Have you tried putting the transfer case in neutral and shifting thru the gears and see if there is any difference?

If the sound is actually from the trans you can disregard this, but noise like that on deceleration is a classic symptom of a pinion bearing headed south. Something you may want to check.

If the Jeep is lifted I'd also check the ujoint angles. If they are off or the yokes are out of phase it will sound just like that.
