    Hey Folks
It's been a while since I posted on here but I do lurk just about every day! Well once again I need some help.... got the 66 on the road but the inside of the gas tank is in such bad shape I have to swap out fuel filters about every 25 to 50 miles and that is after draining and washing out the tank. I need to replace the tank anyway because 10 gallons with the 350 just doesn't take ya very far. does anybody know of a 20 gallon tank that will fit under this thing? I was thinking of using a fuel cell (either 20 or 32 gallon) but wasn't sure if I could mount it underneath or not and I really don't wanna take up what little bit of hauling room I have in the back.
I might as well mention the 26 inch tru kool radiator from speedway (who ever mentioned that on here THANK YOU) solved my overheating problem and in fact I am switching out my thermostat this morning because the thing will not get over 155 degrees.
Anyway any tank help willbe greatly appreciated!

Refresh my memory  , is that an underseat or rear mounted tank from the factory? Several manufactures advertise both underseat and rear mounted tanks for sale, as well as floats, filler hoses, etc... May also want to post an add in the WTB section. PM me if a used, rear mounted factory tank from a '71 is an option...

It's rear mounted but from what I have read it came with the underseat tank and was converted by a previous owner.

15 gallons I believe. i had to remove the V shaped drawbar bracing to fit it up far enough to be out of the way.

4wheel drive hardware has the 22gallon rear fueltanks that fit our CJs. personally i would not get one since i saw someone with one. they hang too low, it might have been the way the guy had it mounted but it hung almost in line with his axles on 33s.

my Jeep had the stock gas tank from under the seat mounted under the rear frame when i got it. The PO had took two peices of cable and ran them under the tank and welded them to the frame to hold the tank in place. Then they cut a hole in the bed for the filler neck. I didnt like it all so I moved the tank back to the orginal location. But now I want to put a 15 gal in the rear as a primary and keep the stock tank too that way I can increase my range with out hanging jerry cans all over the jeep. I already got the switch vavle .

After yesterday I think I am going with a 32 gallon fuel cell mounted in the bed.
Took the Beast off road yesterday for the first time and ended up sliding off into a water hole that was about 4 ft deep. Somehow I ended up with a gas tank full of mud and had to drain it best I could and luckily I had 5 gallons in a can with me. On the way home it would stall out about every 3 to 5 miles and I would clean the mud out of the fuel filter and make a couple more miles and do it again. Got my son removing my tank this morning so we can figure out how the water and mud got into it.
I will have pictures of my first off raod experriance tonight ... inspite of filling the jeep with water, almost turning over and having to get a toyota to drag me out IT WAS A BLAST..... gotta get the Beast ready to go again!

You can also get an oversized tank that fits in the rear betwen the frame rails from Trailquest. (www.trailquest.com) They use to build them to your specs. I had them make one about 3 years ago. It appears pretty good. It hangs kind of low, about the centerline of the differential, but I got the large capacity, I think it is 25 gallons(??). The drawbar frame crosses will have to be cut out to tuck the tank up as close to the floorboard as possible. You will also have to fabricate a new filler neck. I did something custom, but one could use the new style CJ filler neck.

If you put the fuel tank in the bed behind the seat, make sure you make some sort of barrier (firewall) between the tank and the occupant compartment. It may seem like a good place for a fuel tank but consider what could happen in an accident or rollover.
