I was under the hood of my '01 Suburban tonight checking the fluids and such and a thought occurred to me. My 6.0 'Burb has hydraulic ASSISTED brakes, in that the boost unit is powered from the power steering pump just like the older 6.2 Diesels were. Hmm. That would sure solve the clearance issues involved when trying to mate a vacuum-assist unit to a firewall-mounted MC in an early Jeep.

Power steering AND Power brakes in an 80-inch wheelbase Jeep. Now THAT could get interesting..... :D

I have P/S and P/B front disc in mine. :D:D I'm using a small diameter flush mount chevy S-10 booster.
Judicious use of the pedal is a must.

I thought about the hydraulic assist brakes too.
But when the engine is off on that setup it is real real hard to stop. At least when there is no vacuum you can still get it to stop with a vacuum booster. Just have to push real hard.

Steve you could actually get an underfloor vacuum booster on these old jeeps back in the early 60's when they had 9" brakes on them. it was a dealer installed option and maybe not all dealers as they were an aftemarket fit to the single can reservoir. There was a guy a few years ago on the net that purchased a jeep from the original owner that had one installed when he bought the Jeep, this guy was looking for a suitable replacement as his had failed a few years ealier. The photos showed it about 5-6" in diameter and a bout 2"-3" thick or so. It looked like a stock unit only smaller.

I've heard about those, but never actually seen one. I have no desire to have power brakes on the flattie, the discs are all the braking power I need! ;)

    I was just brainstorming....

There is a hydro assist on the market for jeeps if I can find it I'll post it. Someone posted it some time ago, I think.

Got interested in these some time back when I noticed my pickup had one and I thought it might work on a jeep for space reasons, research is as far as I got.

It's from a company called vanco. I think the product is called hydro or hydra-boost. Pricey IIRC.

I have the same idea. I bought a 83 gmc truck with a 350 chevy motor to donate a motor to my jeep. After pulling the motor and trans I realized it was a deisel truck that had been converted and a gas motor and trans installed. I removed the booster and master cylinder along with the power steering pump. Mine will be hydraulic power boosted brakes. This is my next mod after I finish installing the 355 motor and new manual trans. Keep me posted on your decision, we could be very helpful with ideas about this to each other
