OK, I think I learned something tonight but I wanted to ask to be sure.

my primary jeep is a 65 that was a bit modified by the PO. It has a later model gauge cluster. when I purchased it, it had an aftermarket temp gauge. I removed that and robbed the temp sending unit out of my 65 parts jeep. When I start it up, the needle moves from the left side (cold) to the right (Hot) and stays a little above hot. I was thinking that my temp gauge was bad but after looking at the original gauge cluster, I see that Hot and Cold are opposite of the more modern gauge.

So, I think I learned that when the newer cluster goes hot, it is really cold, and vice versa.

    Any thoughts?

Have you swapped the connections to see??
Probably the first thing I would do.
    I don't think a temp. sender cares.
It's justitting in hot water all the time.

    nickmil In mothballs.

Yes, the late temp gauges move in the opposite direction. Some have retrofitted the earlier temp gauge to the later cluster. The temp sender will not change the direction the gauge operates. That's a function of the gauge itself, how it is wired internally.
