Until recently my 57 CJ ran fine. Lately however, when the engine gets hot, it will cut out. I can usually restart by choking the carb. I cleaned out the fuel bowl, charged out the inline above the pump. When I first did the clean out, the inline filter was almost full while the engine was running. Now I have about 3/16 " of fuel in the filter while running. I also installed a second filter. near fuel tank. Years ago I had a Pontiac that did the same thing after it got hot. At the time a family friend a had pressure gauge and we determined it was pumping at half the pressure. Enough when it was cool but not at temp. Hate to to randomly buy parts, but I am starting to wonder if the pump is going bad. Can a pump be intermittently bad?

Do a pressure AND volume test. That should tell.

Thanks for the info. I don't have access to a pressure gauge. I did a volume test and it seems to fill a bean can quickly. That was done on a cold engine. Does it mean anything that there's very little fuel in the inline filter while the motor is running?

Usually a sign of a restriction somewhere or low pressure.

when my pump on my OF was dying it ran fine at idle and part throttle , but under long use of the pedal it eventually would start stumbleing ,bucking and then die. my new pump only pumps 4lbs. I have a gauge on it all the time .

3 to 4 psi at the carb should be perfect for an F-head.
