I was getting ready to swap in a sm-420 in my 69 cj-5 v6. Today I bought a step van to move some stuff around. Come to find out the stepvan has a cummins 4bt attached to a t-18 wide ratio ( ford ). Now I am tempted to put that set-up in my jeep. Anyone here have that set up. and if so is it any better than a 225 with sm-420. I guess the main pull is the coolness factor of having a cummins diesel with a t-18 in a jeep. thanks

Gonna be heavy for the little Jeep and lots of torque especially the frame won't it?

AFW did one in a flatty. I have an Isuzu 4BD1 (3.9 diesel) in my 81 CJ-5. I think my motor is a little lighter the the Cummins but not much. I'm really happy with it's performance on and offroad. I still have to get my speedo hooked up so I can figure out milage one of these day's.

    I say go for it.

That would be soo awesome to have that in my Jeep. What does a 258 or a small block chevy weigh???? Box the frame and put an add a leaf in and go for it.

If I had the know how and the motor/trans, I would certainly try it in a heart beat.

There's some interest in putting the 4BT and 6BT (?) in FSJs over on IFSJA. As Bill mentioned, they are a good match for the M715, but that's a D60 front axle. Even if the frame were reinforced and the springs beefed up, I'd worry about putting a 4BT over a CJ axle.

The AMC I6s (early block) are listed at 500 lbs - that's 75 lbs less than a SBC. The '81 and later 258s are said to weigh 80 lbs less than the earlier motors with the iron manifolds.

With that much weight and Gobs of very low end torque the drive train would be toast, somewhere someone will prove me wrong by putting one in a stock ECJ5 but not the way I drive.

Not knowing what you guys were talking about, I started to do a little research and ran across this site that gave the size and weight of the 4bt as compared to the 4.3 chevy.

Looks interesting. I have a friend that might find that real interesting.

Interesting. 575# is the weight usually figured for a sbc. I was never interested enough to research weight and torque figures. Thanks, food for thought.
