Sorry, but what exactly are you asking?

    How it works?

    How well it works?

I'd say it works the same as any other oil filter on an F4, on this particular application it requires either a restriction in the line or an oil filter with a restriction in it as a full flow setup will reduce gallery pressure to a dangerously low level.

I don't have one but I think we can assume it works well.

Place a wanted ad in the classifieds, I'm sure someone here probably has a spin on or canister system kicking around.

Personally I'd rather have a canister than an upside down spin on filter.

Yeah. The inverted spin-on seems like a mess waiting to happen. Depends on how effective the drain back valve in the spin-on is. A Fram spin-on would likely be dry . You can use a turkey baster or battery bulb (old school!) to remove some of the oil from the canister, so you don't dribble so much when you remove the cartridge.

No problem - not my Jeep - just an example that I picked from eWillys.

I have seen canisters with drain valves. Just not on Jeeps. Seems like it might be a worthwhile mod.

The canister on my '48 has a drain plug....

I have seen the canister style with drain plugs as well. I just can't remember if it was on the MB or my Buick.

My 2 M-series have plugs, I would figure the A1 would have one?

It doesn't matter how careful I am, when I'm done with an oil change I somehow have oil dripped somewhere that I wasn't planning on it being. :)

I'll have to go look, maybe that's where I saw it. It's been a while.o_O
I was thinking of my Ford 8N having it, but I get confused easily. And have too many vehicles.

On my Jeep the filter drains it's self, when I change the oil there is no mess. The filter you want is a Wix 51050, it has two little holes out to restrict the oil, like Howard says. I think the oil drains down on the timing gears when it sets. The oil line comes out from the gallery by the fuel pump goes to the filter and returns to the top of the timing cover for the timing gears.

Are you saying the canister drains completely, by itself?

In my experience they remain 2/3 full - okay for changing the element without mess, but not enough to clean the nasty sludge at the bottom.

I thought he was talking about the spin on.

Gotcha. My mistake, I was thinking of the Wix 51010.

I was talking about the spin on, Glenn. When I change my oil there is no oil in the filter, it doesn't spill oil everywhere like some filters.

Maybe with the F-head partial flow oiling system the filter being empty isn't as critical? The oil pump having to refill the filter virtually every time the engine sits for a bit normally wouldn't be a good thing. Sure seems like oil starvation would soon be an issue.
