So I have done the research on this site and others and seen what different jeep sites have to offer when it comes to a replacement set of tail lights for a 1973 CJ5. I managed to get the white reverse lights off of my old jeep but sadly the original red lights were destroyed when I asked one of the salvage guys to help with removing the spare tire carrier :beer:mehh

Anyway I found a set online and another set at Autozone that are round and look the part but arent exactly true replacements.

What have you guys used when an original set was not available? and is there a true reproduction set of tail lights out there?

I got these at Autozone for my '71, but I believe the originals for '73 were bigger. These were like 7 bucks apiece and have metal housings.

The ones for a factory 71 were the same as the 1973. The lens can be found but unfortunately the closest housings I have seen are the ones posted above by nwedger.

Same here. I have the same taillights that I got from The Jeep Guy as pictured above on Patrick's fine looking New Mexico jeep.

So I grabbed the tail lights from autozone today, opened them up and they are quite nice. Not exactly perfect replacements but they do complete the vintage look and at least dont make it look like an 80s wrangler like my old ones did.

I did take one apart for the passenger side and painted the lower clear lense over with black. Unless you're running dual license plates.:D

Those lights are the best alternative to having the originals.
They have been around so long, that they could be considered substitute original.

In my opinion, they look better than the factory original which look a little too big for the jeep.

You can send the factory tail lights to me if you don't like them. :coffee:

I've seen the identical lights with plastic body...and some with metal. That could be your price difference.

You think the plastic ones are more expensive?
