I'm in the process of putting 4.88's in mine. Finding the gears for the 44 was easy, but it took me 5 months to find a set for my 27. Hope I never break 'em so I have to find them again!!!

Nope I have 3.73's and plan on sticking to them, I think it would be money better spent to put a granny geared 4 speed in, rather than go to gears that force a slower speed or an overdrive, besides the granny gears give better crawl then the 4.88's do.:D

    I'd like both..........
As far as a slower top end, well, the Jeep goes way faster than I need it to now. I'd be happy if it'd still run 70 comfortably..

I completely agree. My father-in-law donated an SM420 out of a early '60's chebby pickup he has to my '65 project. If the '65 has 5.38's that would put me over 90:1. With my 4.88's still 84:1. Either way, much better than the 36:1 I have now with a 3 speed.... However, I can (will) slap the OD on back and enjoy the best of both worlds.

615 also has 4.88's...;) With the OD it ran well down the highway...all 8 hours to Tellico...in the rain...with no doors...;)

I'm gear-conflicted...with the T18 in SSDutch I'll be better off than Dutch was no matter...but I have 5.38's in it and 4.27's sitting along side...

I think I said this already but 4.88s, granny T18, and Warn overdrive. Course I'm running the monster 30" meats, but it drives great, in fact if I someday step up to 31s or 32s I know I will still be OK. Non overdrive is perfect in town @20-35 mph, hit overdrive is like having 3.66 which is perfect, I can hit 65 comfortably and still have power to spare, and a lowlow of 75:1. Best of all worlds. Before I had the overdrive the highway was hell topping out around 45 mph.

Mike, it has been a few years and not sure if my speedo was right, nor did I have a tach. IIRC the speedo actually read low, so I was maybe going a little faster, and 45 might not have been topped out, but the motor was wound up pretty good!!
You're right though the 32s help. I would like to fit some 31s not only for off road but to drop the highway rpms just a notch also!

I am afraid what a tach would tell me sometimes. My speedo is a fair bit lower than I would have guessed. I was hunting one day and playing with my GPS unit, and didn't believe the "real time" speed it was showing me while on the highway. I checked it in our car and it was always "dead on balls accurate". So, now I know when the speedo says 52, I am actually doing 60.

Surprised I never get pulled over for speeding, as I always go by what the speedo shows me ;)

I also have the GPS, very handy for checking "actual" speed! Speedo showing slower than actual is very common when going with larger tires, which makes me wonder how I ended up with one that reads FASTER, by about 8-12 mph. Used to actually, cause I got one of those geared thingies that screws onto the transfer speedo outlet and slows down the reading, got it on ebay cheap, and brand new. Now I'm pretty close.
