I am sorry if this has already been covered (and I am sure it probably has but my search did not pull anything up). What is involved in swapping out a t86 for a t14. I have a t14 but would have to have the t86 rebuild. I dont have the bell housing for the t14 are they different? I do have a t90 could I switch the internals from the t90 to the t86? Which is the best way to go.

    Thanks,

    Henry

The t14 and t86 are the same as far as a the bolt pattern, all you need is the adapter for the t14 to the bellhousing they may even be the same, the length would be whats different. The only bellhousing that was different was the 71 model, all the others used the same bellhousing with the adapter for the t14 ot t86.

IMO the T-86 is a downgrade from the T-14; no stronger (maybe weaker?) and non-synchro 1st gear. I've read that the guts from a T-90 will go into a T-86 case, but you have to change everything. No hands-on experience though.

<edit> Well, maybe a T-86 would be better in some cases. One thing I disliked about my T-14 was the big gap between 2nd (2.61:1) and 3rd (1:1). The T-86 has a 1.687:1 2nd, which would be a better passing gear. The T-14 1st is lower though - 3.1:1 v. 2.789:1.

The t14 is about 5/8" longer, and uses a different output drive gear than the 86.... I swapped my t86 for a t14 with no problems, just had to get the correct drive gear..

    Henry,

Keep me posted on this...I am having problems with my T-86 and might have to do the same. Don't let this thread die...I am learning lots!

Patrick, Output drive gear? as in tcase output gear or input attached to the tranny? I have this same swap planned..

The drive gear that goes on the trans output shaft, that drives the transfer case. There's a 6 spline, and a 10 spline.... I *think* the t14 uses the 6 spline, but don't remember for sure... Someone who knows will chime in....

The T14 uses the 29 Tooth x 10 Spline and the T90's use the 26 Tooth x 6 Spline or 29 Tooth x 6 Spline. This is the gear that will need to be swapped and matched to the rest of the Tcase... In other words you MUST have a 29 Tooth case to start or you have more than one gear to swap out.

Thanks for the info. I will check my t-14 tonight and check the gear teeth. The t-14 I have looks like new. Herm the O/D guy said I will have to change a part on my O/D also for the O/D to work. I was sending it to him for a rebuild anyway. I will try to take some pics as we go along and post them for anyone interested.

    Thanks again,

    Henry:)

Yes, posting pics always seems to always score some brownie points on this forum. I also remember in a previous search on this forum that there is a "walk through" video available (can't remember exact details) on someone rebuilding a T-90 or maybe a T-14. Maybe someone can help refresh my memory. I would certainly be interested in this. Thanks!

Jeeper Preacher: I have yet to find a video on the T-14, but the T-90 video is out there somewhere.

Hank I just did this exact swap last week thru much wise urging from the group here. So I 86'ed the t-86 and separated it from the x-fer case. The t-14 had a 10-spline, 26-tooth drive gear on it, so that wouldn't work with the D-18 that was mated to the '86. Solution was a 10-spline, 29-tooth gear which I got used from R&P in Oregon. Slapped 'er all together, but haven't road tested 'er yet. :)

On my 66, I switched my T86 out for a Herm rebuilt T14 a couple of years ago after the T86 decided to eat itself on the way to work one day.

The adapter is the same as the T86 and like has been mentioned above, I had to get the right output "bull" gear. Make sure your T14 is set up with the long bearing retainer...that was the hardest part to find for my swap.

As for mounting, I had to drill some new holes in the crossmember for the new transmission mount. I also had to get the rear driveshaft shortened as well.

Has worked like a champ ever since...that probably just jinxed me....

I had to drill new holes in the crossmember as well. I did not shorten the rear driveshaft... It's close, but fine. Could be because of my 2.5" lift..

Yep. I'm still running 40 year old springs. Maybe it is time to get those new 2.5 in springs installed....
