But they are the same. Same part number on the sockets even. Just that one has one wire, the other has two. Same lens, only one is clear, one is amber.

None on the 66 Tuxedo. The 71 had em on, sorta high on the tail light panel. They were, as stated, just like the earlier style front turn signals in appearance.

Sorry but I don't follow that:?. If they are different, one has two wires and one has one, one has amber lens and one has clear, how can they be the same regardless of the part #?:?

That would sure screw up stocking. Don't know how you would be sure of getting the part you wanted.

The metal housings are the same and may have the same # stamped in them if they were made for JEEP by an outside supplier, as I believe they were. I would think that once they are assembled with their respective sockets and lens, etc., and put in a JEEP box, there would be a different part #used by JEEP for turn or backup lights. Hope this makes sense and it's just a thought.

My 69 had the smaller bullet type front signals. It had backup lights that were the bullet style also except clear. Joe 69cj5, yours look like the 70 to 75 turn signals.

My 69 has bullet style yellows and backups, no reflectors or signals on front fenders (didn't that happen mid year 69 too?).

Don't forget that '68 was the year the feds mandated a bunch of stuff. It wouldn't be a stretch that backup lights were included along with side marker lights, lap belts, 4-way flashers and dual-circuit braking systems. Not 100% certain, but I think PCV systems became mandatory as one of the first emission-controls that year also.

There were a number of change in all vehicles. '68 - '69 were strange years for Porsche's too.

I rolled (flopped) my first '66 CJ5 (back spring broke) the summer of 1969 on the street. With the insurance money I bought a new tub, hood and fenders. I only need the right front fender, but I could only get ones with the marker light cut out. So I bought both front fenders. The hood came with the side reflector and pre-drilled holes.

I think a lot of car companies were doing what they had to do till they were up the speed on the new requirements. Lots of last minute add-ons.

Not the original lights, but original location and mounting hole.[IMG][/IMG]
