    So, when someone actually uses the search function, using "heater" in their search, they'll get to read this fact filled thread...

    I've had on of these heaters on my XJ for about 5 years. Only problem was after 4 years the "y" fitting got very brittle, Luckily it broke while I was fixing something else.

    I leave mine pluged in all night. Being a Vol. Firefighter, I never know when i'll have to go out at night. It makes me feel better about running it so hard without a cold start. And, I can hear my fire pager since my teeth aren't chattering :D

    the cold inlet on the heater is just a little bit below the plug on the block.
    is that low enough?

    should be fine as long as the outlet is above the inlet, there are some check valves (plastic balls) that only let it flow one way.
    we run those on the farm i have a 500watt lower radiator hose heater myself it does not have checks but works great for upstate NY.

    Yes use a timer with those. Highly recommend you pull that plastic out and replace it with medal. Like $2 at your local auto parts store also install ring clamps(2 per side). The ones you need to use pliers to get on/off instead of aircraft ones. Cover the electrical wire as well as the unit itself with some form of protection against ice,slush,salt,derbies etc. A Leather bag that cinches at the top works nice to cover the unit itself.

    there is one thing i cant find a straight answer to.
    does the Kat heater i installed turn itself off once a certain temp is reached?

    or does it keep getting hotter until it reaches critical mass and pulls a Chernobyl?

    From Kat's site :Circulating Tank Heater

    * Available in 850W, 1000W, 1500W, and 2000W 120V and 240V.
    * Thermostatically controlled 135° - 175°
    I'd assume it shuts off after reaching the upper end. Mine does. Rest easy knowing THAT t-stat is already installed, and won't fry yer slug...................

    Just run a inverter off your battery to a timer. Most inverters today have a low voltage shut off so the heater will shut off if your battery is low allowing you to still start the jeep.
    This avoids the need to plug and unplug every day. I know it sounds lazy but that one day you forget to plug it in(or find out someone unplugged it) I hope it is a warm morning. You can take it a step further and wrap your gas line in a heated sleve(look up diesel applications) for when that temperature drops down in the -30 range etc during the night.

    Why don't you just use a Block Heater? I grew up in Minnesota and virtually every car sold up there had them installed by the dealers. A lot of apartment complexes have outlets installed at each parking spot so the tenants can plug their vehicle in at night. Block heaters are virtually indestrctible, and easy to install.
