I ran one like Sid showed on one of my old work trucks. It worked great. The one I had I could plug in for 15 minutes and fire up the truck and instant heat and defrost and the engine started great!

does anyone have a pic of one of these heaters installed?
i am concerned about mounting it low enough.
can i mount it so it is level with the lower heater hose?

what concerns me is the upper hose goes up and over the engine to my cab heater.

Call me ignorant, but what does this type of heater do exactally? May sound stupid but im curious.

it heats the coolant in the engine making it easier to start on cold days
and also makes the cab heater get warm air sooner when used first thing in the morning.

Bill, I would think that as long as the heater is mounted lower than your heater core you'd be fine. Even without that, you could still bleed the air out if you were dedicated.

Bill, IIRC, mine is mounted on the pass side. Lower end of the unit goes to the block under the dist. There is a hose nipple there on mine, not sure what you have, probably either a plug or maybe a petcock drain. Upper hose is spliced into the heater hose. Works extremely well. Did your come with a bracket? Can mount on firewall below/next to oil bath air cleaner and run hose behind motor to get to heater core. Inlet can come off the rear of the head maybe?

How do these work in practice? Do you leave it plugged in all night, or do you turn it on 1/2 hour before you want to use the jeep? Does any coolant circulate?

Depending on the temp, I'll plug in from 1/2 to 1hr before starting. Coolant circulates due to convection as there is no "pump" in the unit, just a heating element.

yes it came with a bracket.

thats probably what i will do.
i have that petcock and that route seems easy.
right next to my oilbath are my heater hoses (heater mounted in glovebox)

I would keep an eye on those plastic hose connections. It'll be fine for a few years, but plastic fittings in heater lines will get brittle IME. Maybe plastics are better today, but the plastic coolant flush tees were a hazard back in the day.

We built a post out in the parking area with power to is to plug engine heaters into them when we lived in Craig. The power was on a timer and would kick on @ an hour or so from when we were leaving in the morning. The heaters in the trucks/jeeps would be left on Def and you would have a nice clear WS and warm vehicle in the morning :)
