Is it common for 70 cj5's to have 4.83's factory? I pulled the axle tag, and the numbers are as follow

    017993
    4.83 44-8

Which tells me its a 44, with 4.83's.... Is that right? As ive said before im not really a jeep guy, and it doesnt make since to be geared that low from the factory.

If this does infact have 4.83's... will ring and pinion from a 27 swap into a 30? This could save me mega bucks on regearing my waggy axles if so.

um nope 4.88 was an optional ratio for that year IIRC. 44-8 gives 5.555555/1 ratio are you sure that second number is not a 9 thats 4.88

Hmm. Never heard of a 4.83. A 3.83, yes. Maybe it's really "4.88 44-9". Take the cover off and look for the ratio on the edge of the ring gear, like 44-9 gives 44/9 = 4.88. Common CJ ratios are 5.38, 4.88, 4.27 and 3.83.

    3.73

Sure it does... I would not want mine any higher with 4.88's. Just makes the use of an overdrive more encouraging. ;)

Oops - what Mike said. 3.73, not 3.83.

It very well could be an 8.... some of the numbers are hard to make out.

but I can see 4.8 really well and 44-8

So... can I switch the d27 ring and pinion ( or carrier and all) into my d30 closed knuckle from a 72 waggy?

The 4.88's are desirable for many people in a dana 27. I think you would sell them easier if you part it out. There have been many people on this board looking for them from time to time. Unless, someone is near you and has been looking. Otherwise shipping the whole setup kills the deal.

There's a guy in 4x4 club with a willies that wants to buy them complete... I just dont know what to offer them to him for. He asked em to check the gears as soon as he found out I bought the vw. Wants the whole setup and is willing to coem get them.

If he doesnt want them and I yank the gears... whats a fair price to offer them up for?
