how do I know what gears mine has....

    without opening. I climbed under it and saw no tag. It was originally a 134, 3 spd. 63 CJ6

    It's more than likely 5.38's, if original.

    is that because it's a 134 engine? just curious since my v6 is 4.88

    look carefully on the rear axle too. i almost missed my tag.

    If I recall:

    jack up rear end, mark drive shaft with chalk, rotate tires 2 full turns while countings number of times the chalk rotates. Unless you have a locker of some sort.

    Yes. The V6 had 3.73 standard, with 4.88 optional. The f head had 5.38 standard, 4.27 optional.

    other gears 3.54 and 4.10/4.09 (both from wagons and trucks).

    if it is a posi/limited slip/powerlock: jack up the rear end getting both tires off the ground. spin one tire one full revolution (the opposite tire will spin in the same direction at the same rate). how ever many times the driveshaft revolves is your ratio. the ratios mentioned above are what you are looking for.

    if it is an open differential: jack up the rear end leaving one tire still on the ground. spin the tire that is off the ground 2 complete revolutions. how ever many times the driveshaft revolves is your ratio.
