I'm looking for a title for my 1970 cj5. Does anyone have one to sell or know where I can get one?

Welcome, why couldn’t you apply for a lost title from the RMV?

I've got one with the tag for a 63 but I'm really hoping to trade for a 52 or 53 M38A1 title and tag...

I live in New York. I did not know that you could just apply for a lost title at the DMV. When I got the Jeep it never had one.

I just went through this whole fiasco when I was thinking about buying a Jeep with no title from MA. I am in NY as well. Have someone from the police dept run the numbers and get the incident report from it. This helps clarify that it is not stolen or whatever else. There are a couple of different forms you will need to fill out from the DMV itself. One form basically has you verify "under penalty of law" that you are the rightful owner. Also, I even had a policeman from NY PM me and said he would run the number for me and mail the report to me. However, I do not think it would be appropriate to give out his info and volunteer to have it done for anyone. He may see this and PM you. However, anyone can do this.

Easiest way is to go to your local DMV office and get the forms from them. If you are in the Watertown, NY area let me know and I might be able to help more. It seems that you may have to "pick" the DMV office you go to. I was getting conflicting information and some offices are more helpful than others.

    Good Luck

I just did my 45 2A a few months ago in NY. Bought it in VA years prior and he gave me a bill of sale.
You don't get a title w/ a jeep made prior to sometime in the 70's. You get a transferable registration.
You need a bill of sale, tracing of the serial number, proof of the year and weight help too as they love to make 2400lb jeeps weight 3K lb.I just brought a copy of Jim Allen's book and showed them. The cost of the registration is weight based. You will also need insurance. That's it. Do not remove the serial number plate and bring it to them as they will confiscate it. If they say you need a previous title or registration tell them that none were available and that the previous owner is not cooperative or that it was purchased out of state and none was available. I was in and out in 10 min once I got up front. I called the state DMV office for the paperwork ahead of time and filled it all out.

It depends on the state you purchased the vehicle from. They all have different requirements as far as titling the vehicle or having a transferable registration. The DMV has a book and has the requirements by state listed.

NY only has NY records and the records that they have in NY are a maximum of 7 years old. So if you buy a jeep in NY that has not been registered in 7 years they have nothing.

I have a '65 that is supposed to be originally registered in Colorado. Did a records search and it came back "No record for VIN", presumably because it has not been registered for many years. Getting it registered in CO was going to require having it inspected by a law enforcemet officer (which it must be running and fully operational at that time), appraised, bonded, then titled.

In KS, I could bring my Colorado VIN search that showed no record, along with a Bill of Sale, and have it inspected by a law enforcement officer(not sure if it has to be running, as they were not clear about that), and have insurance before they would title it.

In OK, my father-in-law is a county Sheriff, and my mother-in-law works at the court clerk's office............I'll let you imagine the rest.

The point of the story is shop around. If you have a brother/cousin/etc. in a neighboring state that is less strict let them register it for you. You may have a friend at Broadway Titles if you need. $139 is much cheaper than what CO wanted.
