Ok guys, I'm looking to do a Ford 302 swap, but that's for another post... I've got a 1974 CJ5 258 I6 with a 4 speed.... That's where my question comes into play.

I'm not sure what tranny I have. The jeep supposedly had had the tranny and motor rebuilt a couple times. It was my uncles and he gave it to me to work on. This is the info I got for him and my dad. Now the tranny has an unsynchroed first, and it's too low of a gear to use on the street. Reverse is up and over, beside third. I haven't had a chance to get under the jeep and see if there's an adapter on the tranny or not.

I was wondering what you guys think this tranny is. I'm wanting to know because I'd like to use it with my 302 swap if possible.

    Thanks in advance,

    Paul

    Welcome from Kansas Paul.

    Sounds like possibly a T18. That's gud!

Some of the other guys will chime in and let you know what you need to do to mate it to a 302 I'm sure.

    Welcome Paul, from Plymouth, Ma.
I agree with Sparky about it being a T-18. If it is the original tranny you should have an M on the third digit of your vin. Also, it should have PTO covers on both sides of the tranny. The first gear is 4.02:1.

T-18's only had the pto cover on one side. Ford cases were on the right side and Jeep and IH cases were on the left. T-19 had the pto cover on both sides. lf stock it should be the T-18 with 4-1 first gear as mentioned. Very strong transmission and very desireable. The only stock 4 speed more desirable is the 6.32-1 version but that was not used in '72-'75. At least none of the ones I've rebuilt have been and seems to be a consensus of opinion on that.

    PS, Welcome from Portland, OR.

    The 258 with a T18 is a great combination - be proud!

The T18 is a heavy-duty cast iron case truck 4-speed. It's very strong. In '74 the 258 was available with the close-ratio version of the T18. As Chuck wrote, you'll have an M in your VIN if it's stock - I'd assume it is. In '74, you could only get the T18 with a 258 (and with the 232? Not sure... but I think not), not with the 304 V8.

I'm pretty sure the Jeep T18s have a single PTO cover on the drivers side (Ford T18s on the passenger side, and T19s on both sides).

    BTW Welcome from Boston!

Nick, Tim, your correct, driver side PTO for the Jeep T-18 passenger side for the Ford and both sides of theT-19. I should of remembered that I have 1 JeepT-18 and 2 Ford T-18s. What Paul has is a T-18b.
