Transmission swap question

    Rather than bump an 8 year old thread, I figured I would start a new one. I have a '66 CJ5 Dauntless with a grenaded T-86 that I'm working on, and ran across a T-14/Dana 18 combo from a ~'68 CJ5 Dauntless on Craigslist. Even comes with driveshafts. Everything I've read said the main issues would be with mating to the Dana 18, which if I get both, I won't have to worry about, especially since this Dana 18 is already twin stick (!), and the driveshaft length change, which I should be covered if I get the driveshafts with it. So it sounds like all I'd have to do is make a couple new holes in the crossmember support? My old one did have a PTO for a Ramsey winch that I'd like to keep running, I'm a little worried about the winch driveshaft ending up too short/long now.

    Should be an easy swap.
    You'll have to cut a hole for the t case shifters.
    I'm not sure how the T86 & T14 compare in length, so so modification to the PTO shafts may be necessary.

    Ah right, going from single to twin stick would probably need some extra room, I'm fine with that. The more shifters the better, if I could someday I'd like to have an overdrive too, for a combined five shifters. No one would know how to drive it. Got a pic of the gearbox, I don't see any obvious signs of chipped gears, could use a bit of a cleaning maybe. Look good to anyone else? I'll probably pick this up Sunday and hopefully this encourages me to getting back in the garage this winter and getting this thing running.

    Looks like a t90 to me.

    I wondered, with it having the twin-stick Dana 18 attached. Thought the seller might have been confused on the years or something. I might still be interested then, I can use the guts to rebuild my T-86, and possibly the Dana 18 parts to rebuild my Dana 18 as a twin stick, and then I wouldn't even have to worry about changing PTO driveshaft length. Just need to get the longer T-90 input shaft, which I have an ongoing listing for saved on eBay. Here's the CL pic.

    Edit: Yeah, I just noted the shape of the top, even without looking at the gears it looks way more like an 86/90 case, and since some of the gears are straight and not helical, I guess that would make it a T-90. Damn, was hoping for all synchronized forward gears. Oh well. At least the transmission will look stock.

    Yep - I'd pass. Looks like a T-90 with that straight cut sliding gear. A T-14 is all synchro and will have two synchromesh collars, not a sliding gear. Plus that looks like it's had water in it.

    You can fix the T-86 using T-90 gears. Done all the time, but you need to swap out all the gears.

    If you want a donor T-90, try eBay or the Willystech parts list. Or just buy a complete transmission exchange from Herm - http://hermtheoverdriveguy.com/?page_id=1308

    I'm with Tim. That tranny is no jewel and I wouldn't run it without a rebuild. If the whole setup is cheap enough it might be worth picking up for the twin stick parts, especially if the t-case is in good shape. I'd still be tempted to tear it down and rebuild it too. Price out the parts to rebuild your T86 and a twin stick conversion from Herm and see which is the easiest on your bank account.

    Could be a T-86 with T-90 gears, and the seller is just mistaken. Or it could be a '68 that's been converted from a F134.

    The gears look in bad shape to me. Look at the pitting on the sliding gear. And it's pretty well rounded too. Second gear is also pitted, and the spots are definitely water etching.

    I might get it if it's say $20-30 cheap, but I'd expect to not use any of the gears.

    Appreciate the info guys. Seller wanted $75 each, I can afford to wait then it sounds like. Not in a rush at the moment.
