    Ok-

When moving down the highway at a reasonable speed (30-55mph) I get a whine out of the trans or tcase while maintaining speed. If I let off of the accelerator, it stops. If I speed up, it stops. Sound familliar to anyone? What do you think I need to stop the whine?

    TIA

How many miles on the D18 since built/rebuilt?
Could be wear on the intermediate shaft/bearings.

    Mileage over 50K?
Then a rebuild would be good for it, using the Novak kit and special intermediate shaft.
I rebuilt mine, and had never disassembled a tranny or tcase before that. The instructions/guide from Novak and Rick Stivers are very good.

Of course the whine could be coming from somewhere else, but this is a likely candidate. Is this whine a relatively new phenomenon? What tranny are you running?

(Another option is to just get earplugs ;) :D )

Can you get it to happen in lower gear, or is it only in 3d?

Nothing new, just more intense/annoying with the top on it. Both the trans and the tcase leak pretty bad, so I was going to replase the seals in them this summer anyway. I guess a couple of rebuild kits are in order.

I thought about earplugs too :D. I run the 350 with glass packs and it is very loud @ 3500rpm going 55mph

Yeah, I'd think transfer case. The 3-speed Borg-Warners are pretty quiet until they're out of oil or really worn. T18s whine in the intermediate gears especially, but that's not throttle related IIRC. You can run through the transmission gears with the TC in neutral; that might help to isolate the noise.

If you can hear it over glass packs it must be a pretty good whine. Don't forget the possibility it's coming from the rear end too.

Cat's YJ pinion bearing is going out... it's making the same noise push in clutch and it goes away... no more tention on the pinion bearing i guess... but we put it up on lisft and put it gear and it was definatley the rear... u may want to try it out on a lift to verify...

That's right. Push in the clutch and your going from loaded to coasting.

It doesn't whine when there is a load on it though. Only when maintaining speed. That's what has me puzzled.

Did you notice the noise before you installed the top?

I notice alot of noises in mine after I put the top on. Can't wait to get the top off so those noises go away. :D
