NICE start, get the mechanicals going and should be a piece of cake!

    360 is good power for a CJ-5. 401 is even better. =)

Strange request, but can you measure the bottom of you fender and tell me if its 7 inches?

Yes, I will tomorrow. Are you talking about from the fender well to the joint with the tub? Just making sure I get correct measurement

    Correct

I guess it depends on exactly where you're measuring to

Do you have the factory service manual (aka FSM, TSM)? The manual for your Jeep will be the best single source of info you can find.

There is a '74 manual online at www.oljeep.com - all the components you asked about are the same '72 to '74, and will be in there.

Take a look at www.jeeptech.com and www.novak-adapt.com for some more descriptive information.

401s are great motors, but you need to check the block casting to make sure you really have a 401. And, they can have their own issues ...

    Nice looking Jeep!

I will read up on those! Thanks for the links. I did check the block casting and it does have a 401. I posted my update in the wrong place last night. It's in the exhaust issues thread I started in intermediate tech forum. I'll transfer it to build thread tmrrw when I'm not on a tablet.

Got quite a bit of progress made today. basically put a whole new fuel system in. New filler hose, vent hose, fuel tank, sending unit, fuel lines, and fuel pump. Then it was ready to start for the first time since I got it. Checked the vitals one last time, then fired it up. It started right up, and ran good! It has a fan belt squealing, no exhaust past the manifolds so I didn't run it long. But the oil pressure was good and it seemed to run decent. I'm sure it'll need a bit of tweaking, but I was pleased. Photobucket is "processing my video". I'll post it sometime soon.

Still a lot of electrical clean up to do, but that will happen over time. I may have a solenoid or resistor issue as I had to run a hot jumper to the coil to get it to fire. I tied a new mechanical oil pressure gauge to the brace so I could watch it while standing beside the engine. I didn't worry with the temp gauge yet, as I wasn't going to let it run long. Primed the carb a time or three until it started pumping fuel, then it ran on its own. As mentioned earlier, it has a loud fan belt, along with no muffler. So it's obnoxiously loud. Lol. But it runs none the less!

Thanks. I recently ordered a flat fender the kit the company swore up and down it was a custom fit for a mid 60's CJ5. I can see now their measurements were for a late model.

    Update:
Recently, I've been working on the brakes. A PO, or PPO, has put a booster on them, evidently from a later model jeep. The master cylinder was leaking, it basically had corroded through the end of the bore. I bought a re-manufactured from the local parts house to replace it. While trying to bleed the brake lines, I noticed my front left wheel cylinder was froze up, so I decided to go ahead and replace all 4. After getting all the cylinders replaced, the front ones bled easily and worked great, but I didn't have much stroke with the pedal. Found the problem when I tried to bleed the rear brakes. I wasn't getting any fluid to the cylinders. I loosened the steel lines from the Tee on the axle and wasn't getting any fluid to there either. Ended up being that rubber hose from the frame to the axle. The T-block is crimped on it, and somewhere it was clogged. The local NAPA was able to order me the "rear center brake hose", I installed it last night and have all 4 brakes working properly. Hopefully will be driving it in a couple weeks! I'll try to take more pictures, I get tied up working and all greasy, then forget to take the pics.

Going to bring this one back to the top and post a few pictures of where I am with it.

This was last fall, my daughter wanted to ride to school in the jeep before I "tore it up".

Got the 401 out...still trying to decide on which way to go with engine. If you have any ideas, see my "Engine selection" thread in the tech forum. I'm always open for ideas.

As it sits now...tub is unbolted, and ready to lift off as soon as I get a couple of my brothers to help me.

My plan is to get a little body work done soon. It doesn't need much, but it's got a few cracks in it. When it's done, I'll get it painted. In the meantime, the frame does need a little work. I've found a few cracks in some welds, and want to clean up some areas that the PO boxed in with diamond plate.

Hopefully by then will have whichever engine I decide on ready, and start back to the top. It's going to be a long while before she's back on the road, but now that I've committed to restoring it, I'm sure I'll stay on it.

aallison 74 cj6, 76 cj5. Has anyone seen my screwdriver?

IF you want a different engine, I'm sure there are plenty of us here that would be glad to assist you and swaping motors. I have a 304 that runs fairly well in a cj 5. When I first got it it had plenty of power for a short wheel base vehicle. The 6 is plenty as well. Also a bit lower weight so that is another plus.

But I like the big motors. I have a built 401 that in going in a CJ6. It should run like a raped ape.

NOt sure how I"d feel about the diamond plate. NOt orgional but if it was welded in and in good shape, I'l leave it. Too many other things to fix if that does not bother you. The tub looks fairly good.

And that is a great pict of you and the kid.

I'm not crazy about the diamond plate either. But I'm afraid I'd tear more up getting it out than I care to fix. It doesn't bother me enough to go through the trouble.

Thanks for the compliment on my daughter. She's got an older sister that wouldn't be caught dead riding to school in that "piece of junk". Lol

There were Jeep carpet kits that fit very well and would cover all the diamond plate. They even made one for the CJ-6. The only difference is the length of the carpet for the rear floor.

    Yep, great picture. Big smile!

As mentioned, the 401 is a lot of engine for that chassis. We have another thread about engine choice in the Intermediate forum that you might want to read. Engine Selection: What To Do?

After a little more investigation last night, I don't think the diamond plate is welded in like I thought. What I thought was a weld, I now believe is just silicone that's been painted. I wasn't really working on it, just had a few minutes to waste. So it may be able to come out after all.
