My T176 transmission keeps popping out of third gear. What can I do to fix this problem? Will I have to do a rebuild or is there a fix to it? A guy told me he could do a 3 speed conversion to it. I dont know if I want to give up a gear. Would this be recommended? Thanks

I would recommend rebuilding your T-176 as it was the stronger of the Jeep trannys in the 80s. Rebuild kits can be had for $80-140 and come with directions. Just take your time and work on a clean bench, make sure to take notes and some pics of the tear down.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

you might just pull the cover and check the shift forks and shift lug
the covers are aluminum and they are prone to wear
if nothing obvious shows up, then what Chuck said

Here's some background information on your T176: http://www.5speeds.com/toploader.html

I'd expect the obvious 3-speed conversion for the T176 would be a T150 from a '76-79 CJ. The T150 is said to be stronger than the T176, but I think they'll both stand up fine behind a 258.

On the T90s you have to replace 2nd gear to stop it from popping out of gear. The bushing inside the gear wears, causing it to skew wrt the shaft, pushing the clutch sleeve away from the gear teeth. Is there a similar problem with the T176?
