I've tried the search function, but I guess this question is too broad - does anyone know of any fitment issues regarding a 258 from a 1981 CJ5 being put in a 1972? The 72 has a blown 258 in it. I understand the 81 prob had electronic ignition. Looking for any advice, thanks

The 258s changed substantially for the 1981 model year. The engine was made considerably lighter, but the mounts, external dimensions, and bell pattern remained the same. You could use the 1981 engine complete and adapt to the newer carburetor linkage and plumbing, or you can take your 1972 manifolds, carburetor and distributor etc and bolt them to the 1981 engine. You will have to use the 1981 valve cover with the 1981 head - that's not interchangeable with the 1972 engine.

The only hang up may be the pilot bushing, and crankshaft pocket. May be the same, or not, not sure. Should be easy to sort out with the right pilot bushing.
