Does anyone have any experence of trying to fit a tomken (or are there any others?) steering brace for the power steering box to a 73 CJ5?

They list the part for a '76, but forgive my ignorance, but does anyone think this could be mounted onto a '73? What are the differences?

Or does anyone make one for the '73?

I want to know if this a goer before I have one shipped to the UK.

    Many thanks.

No personal experience with this, but '72-75 and '76-on steerings are not the same. The '73 has a cast bracket that's bolted into the frame. The '76 steering uses a stamped and welded bracket. The configuration is similar, though I'm sure it would not fit.

The '72-75 intermediates are black sheep in a lot of ways - many differences from the earlier Kaiser Jeeps and different from the "final" AMC design. Your best bet is to make one. I've heard that a Chevrolet connecting rod fits snugly around the end of the steering box - add a piece of tubing to the opposite frame rail.

Thanks Tim. I was pretty sure there would be some fairly fundamental differences, but didnt know what they would be.

Interesting that you mention the use of a con rod, as my mechanic had thought of doing exactly that before stumbling across the tomken.

I can feel some more fabrication coming on...

I bought a Currie stabilizer and all I was able to use was the actual clamp that goes around the box snout. I had to fab the rest. I put it on a '67 with Saginaw PS. I'm wondering if a pipe clamp used in overhead piping would work. Like that used in industrial type overhead piping/plumbing.

I was able to use an exhaust clamp. I just welded it to a piece of scrap square tube and welded that to some tabs I could attach to the other frame rail. Not exactly heavy duty, but its what I had lying around and it works.

Warrior makes one for the intermediates: http://www.warriorproducts.com/. I have one installed, but no pics. It was annoying to install because the bolts it came with were too long, and there were not enough of them. Also, the holes on the shackle mount side did not line up with the frame well and the yoke straps (the pieces that wrap around the ps box were a struggle to fit properly). I was assured that I got the right piece so I modified it to work. In the end it does add a little piece of mind that it will be more difficult to crack my frame. The fianl score: three Jeeps out of five.
