having vapor lock on my 67 CJ 6. Need to hook up the return line.

However the tank doesn't have the fitting on the top and the float and sender is the type that attaches with screws, so can't use the sender with the return already attached.

It would be easiest to hook up the return thru the drain hole. Any experience and thoughts about doing it this way?

What about dumping it back into the fuel filler neck?

I like the idea above. However I opted to weld in a bung to put the return line in the stock location. I got the bung at McMaster-Carr.

I would remove the sender and install a nipple for return in the sender plate. returning to the drain port seems like a particularly bad idea. At that point, you have to overcome the fluid pressure from the weight of the fuel above the drain. Would likely work poorly, if at all.

What I would do, if there is room on the plate - Drill a hole for a 1/8" NPT thread, tap the hole, and thread in an 1/8" NPT - 1/4" barb elbow in the plate. Seal the threads with solder.

    Thanks All,

Alan F think I saw your post when I searched this topic regarding the bung. Trying not to weld on a tank that had gas. If I was putting in a new tank I would definitely do it that way.

Timgr think you are right. I will see if I have enough room on the sender plate.

So here is the dumb question, why do the earlier (58 in my case) not have a return line?

To close this out, here are a few pics. As timgr suggested I put the return into the sender plate.

    Soldered the bottom:

I hooked it up with a hard line, instead of flex.

I put a piece of rubber fuel line on the steel line where it went over the strap to prevent any rubbing.

Nice work. I did similar and it worked great when I still had the underseat tank.

did you put a line inside the tank too? the fuel returning to the tank will froth up and could create a separate issue, i usually run a short piece of tubing down into the tank about 3/4 of the way to prevent aeration of the fuel...

Fuel return is only used on V6's.

Mmm. I have never seen the return lines with any kind of extension into the tank. They just dump into the top. When you extend down into the tank, you have the same fluid back-pressure issue that the return line in the bottom would have.

Regarding why no return with the 134s, I'd guess it's because no on had yet figured out that returning the extra fuel to the tank has a benefit at the time the 134 designs were conceived. Your fuel pump has to have enough capacity to keep the bowl filled, and return fuel to the tank. The AMC engines use a fuel filter with an orifice in the return line that limits return flow. Patrick implemented something like this for his Jeep recently, and made his own orifice. So it seems that the 134 fuel pump has enough capacity to return some fuel.

The v6 tank i had used a piece of hard line inside the tank. It was angled so that it would direct the returning gas at the inlet. I figured it did this to help keep any sediment in the tank away from the inlet. Both lines where in the bottom of the tank
