I want a swing out tire rack for my heep. I would like an original one 'cause I like the look. There is one at a local wrecking yard; however, they are attached to the tub and this concerns me. Do they, or will they cause cracks in the tub with a 33x10.5x15 tire and a couple of gas cans?

You are referring to the Whitco tire carrier? There's no provision for jerry cans on the Whitco carrier. The Kayline carrier has a single can IIRC - there may be a 2-can model. Whitcos are Jeep-approved dealer installed accessories.

I had a Whitco on my '75 and had a 31" 10x15 tire on it with an 8" rim. It broke. The body was ok, but the plate that mounts the tire to the rack broke. These carriers have a 5"x5"x3/16" (?) plate that the OEM side-mounted tire bracket mounts to. This plate broke and sent the tire bouncing down the Santa Monica freeway at 4AM.

In my experience, yes. I'll only go frame mounted with spares now.

With a big tire, even the center mounted spare on the optional solid back panel (M38A1 style) will crack the body. Too much weight and too much leverage.

I have the whitco carrier and I like it...It mounts across a seam on the tub and I never had any trouble with body damage....Several years ago, someone came out with a similar swing out carrier that mounted at the corner of the tub and it would pull the tub apart at the seam...The largest tire I've carried is 31x10.5x15 tho
