11" Brake Woes

Ok, looks like the 11" jeep 72-76 shoes do not center properly on the backing plate. Not sure where this plate came from, was on the axle. All the parts except for the backing plate are stock intermediate jeep brake parts, and are mounted to the Dana 27 of my '65.
have not been able to find a different backing plate.
    Ideas?
    thanks

Can you get the drum on?

Nope, the old drum sort of goes on but rubs, a new drum hits the metal tang on top. The shoes sit out of round about 1/4" or so too low. very odd. All the parts fit otherwise - springs, shoes, adjuster, etc. and the backing plate "looks" right, but of course is not.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

Appears to not be a Jeep 11" backing plate from what I can see.

Any chance that is a 10" Backing plate? A 10" Backing plate measures 11 inches across. Just asking the "dumb question "

That mounting flange in the center of the plate is different.

Looks like possibly a Jeepster Dana 30 rear backing plate.
I would investigate what Daryl said about it being a 10" brake backing plate. That would explain why the shoes are off center because the upper pivot would push the shoes downward like you have.

it looks like the backing plate is not large enough in diameter. when i looked at the picture i thought 10" plates as well. i don't remember there being that much of a flange at the mounting surface to the axle either but its been a long time

It's an 11" backing plate, from what I have found, of a Ford. Definitely does not work.

Thought it looked familiar. I made that mistake years ago.

You changing axles and inherited an oddball backing plate? Or thisbcame on your Jeep?

Ford 11" backing plate will work for Jeep applications, with the proper adaption. Novak used to supply instructions on using the Ford 11" Bendix brake backing plates. If these were unaltered Ford backing plates, I would expect the diameter and position of the shoes to be correct, but not the depth of the drum. If the position of the shoes is wrong, that suggests the backing plates are not for 11" Bendix brakes (which both Ford and Jeep are).

Ford 11" brake backing plates work very well on early CJ's. The one in the pic is not for 11" brakes from what I can see on my phone. Remember, the measurement is from the inside of the drum for brake diameter and what I can see that does not look like what you have. A denial or confirmation would be if someone can post a pic with a tape measure showing the diameter of the backing plate for 11" brakes. I no longer have any as I've converted eveything I own to disc brakes front and rear except the '57 which still has 9" brakes.
The Ford backing plate offset is the same as Jeep CJ, just the center stamping shape is different and sometimes other minor differences that generally does not effect anything functionally.

looking at the wear on that plate it looks like the po ran it with the shoes uncentered.

FWIW I checked with Jeep Republic in Colorado. They would sell me used backing plates for $155 ea. Cripes! I am better off buying a full 11" conversion kit for $300. So much for Jeep Republic, no thanks.

Those are for AMC 20 rear axle. Won't work on a 44, 30, 25, 27, etc. It was a good effort though!

AVOID Jeep Republic - his prices are so far out of line as to be ridiculous. PM me. It may be this weekend, but I can see if I have setups available if you don't find what you need. I don't have as many spare rears as fronts since I usually convert the front to disk and keep 11" in the rears.
