    After several years I got going on this and two other annoying things to do with the steering column, horn staying on (broken turn signal cancelling cam) and the ignition cylinder (too much force to hold it in while turning to start the engine)
    With the steeting wheel off and the column exposed think I can see what seems to be a teeter totter switch that holds continuity between the left and right turn signals but my FSM doesn't show me what is what. Does anyone have a diagram or photo of the top end of the column?

    There is an '82 Jeep manual online at www.oljeep.com - it contains good instructions for how to take the GM tilt column apart. Also read this - http://street2mud.com/webfiles/Tilt Column Fix.pdf

    If the hazard switch won't stay in, I'd say it's worn out and/or broken. Isn't the hazard switch part of the column harness? You should be able to splice in the switch or harness from any GM column. If you have the tools to take the column apart, just about any GM car of the era could supply parts.

    Thanks guys but it's not the switch (new 2 years ago from the top to the bottom with wiring of the column) it's just the Hazard button itself.
    I had enough slack in the cable group to pull out the upper end of the assembly and from what I see it seems that the Hazard button installed [IMG]
    May be the wrong type and not long enough to engage. I wonder if these may have a longer reach. [IMG]

    I was able to remove the collar of that newer two piece Hazard button and I get adequate clearance for the button to stay pushed in, then to disengage a firm grip and it pops out, so until I find an early Haz button, I'll just go with it. A wierd thing I found in this column was an STS threaded in as kind of set screw for the ignition cylinder. It doesn't seem OE and there's no reference I can find about it in the TSM. Has anyone else found this?

    From another forum;

    Later model CJ's has a screw that held the lock in place.

    See the angled slot in the top cylinder? The lower lock just has a spring loaded clip that holds it in place.

    The yellow hole is were the retaing screw goes and the red box is were earlier CJ's had a detent to push in to release the lock.

    I have the earlier cylinder and that set screw is what was making me have to push the key in too firmly to get it to the Start position.
