I don't even know how, but my 71 t case is cracked across the top of the two nubs on the rear for the shift rails....not quite 2" long....doubt it affects any structure

Options are either have my 55 tcase bored to 4" to fit the 71 t14 and rebuild it with the 71 d18 innards, or have the crack welded by a shop......or....or.....drill the ends, jb weld it, and see what happens in 3-5 years when this might be in a driving condition again

Looking at novaks chart my 71 t14 main gear won't work with the 55 case gears, and the t90 gear has different spline count, so I'd have to change all the gears over anyways

    Both have 1 1/4 intermediate shafts....I believe

Other than the jb weld rig, whichever case would need to be gutted for the machine shop, then have a rebuild kit thrown in for reassembly

    WWECJ5D?

    Thanks for any opinions!!!

Just found a d20 case for 100 bucks....suppose that would be more than machining or welding?

    Thanks!!

Would the centered output on the D20 cause any problems compared to the off-set D18?

What I have learned on this site is that the late D18 and 20 cases are the same. They both have the 1 1/4 intermediate shaft and same big hole opening to the transmission. Awap gears, do rebuild, set end play and you're done. Its pretty easy, just takes a bit of time if you have never done it. There are some really good youtube videos on the rebuild.

A big hole1971 18 case is essentially a 20 case. Just swap the parts into a 20 case. Should be able to find one for free or next to it.

If memory serves, you may need to watch the fill plug location on some D20 cases.

I just replied to the d18 thread that would be super sweet thanks for the link!!

Right now all my parts are soaking in a bucket of old gas so they'll be all shiny clean and ready to go be great to have an empty case all ready to get machined since I still gotta pull my gears and shafts

I have not worked on one, but looks like a t-14? Internet says it came on 72 to 75 jeeps with a D20

Yes. Mine is a "dana 20 case", and we had to drill and tap for a fill plug in the standard D18 location.

The other thing to watch out for if you have stock clutch linkage is the boss and threaded hole for the clutch bellcrank pivot. Some 20's had the cast in boss but were not drilled and tapped, some were already drilled and tapped, and some don't have the boss at all.

I think that trans looks like a T15. Those were usually behind the 304 V8 AMC intermediates. The T14 was typically used on the same Jeeps behind the 232 and 258 sixes.
The free case millenium falcon is offering I believe is a small hole case used with the T90.

Would the small hole work in place of the big hole case?

It's possible to bore out the small hole case so it'll bolt up in place of the large hole case.
But, the recess in the face of the tcase is smaller (where the countershaft sticks out of the back of the trans)
and that will prevent it from bolting up to some transmissions.
    DAMHIK.....

The D20 case seems a much better option to me.

Not to mention a lot stronger case. As noted, things to watch for to make sure you get one that doesn't require more work, but a D20 case is absolutely the best route. And especially so if you want to install some lower ratio aftermarket gears at some point in the future.

Been trying since Sunday to get the d20 but haven't heard back yet......haven't given up yet lol

My 55 is a small hole as well which I could get bored out

That one has the clutch pivot ball but the 71 has a bracket and a cable linkage so that won't be no trouble
