I am going to have to pull the Toolbox from the passenger's side to fix 4 rust spots under the welds. I am most likely going to leave it out and spray the entire inside with bed liner. My question is has anyone else pulled the toolbox? If so, how difficult was this? I can get the welds on the front, back and Driver side ok, but the side by the door is what worry’s me. If there are a lot of welds on that side it will be a pain...

Thanks in Advance for any help or advice.

    Casey

I haven't done it, but there is some reference to removing the toolbox on the CJ-3B page: http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Tech/FloorPanels.html ... I'd expect the CJ-5 to be similar.

If it were mine, I would not leave out the toolbox unless it were beyond repair. It's a very "Jeep" feature and if you ever decide to sell the Jeep, having it would be better than not.

    Related note...

What are your seat frames like on the passenger side? Does it attach to the outside of the tub and top of the toolbox like the earlier Jeeps?

If so...I have a seat frame that was already extended to make up for the lack of a toolbox...Dutch's had been removed to make room for a heater.

    Thanks for the info,

I am going to have this Bed lined and am still debating the re-install of the toolbox. I know it is a very "Jeep" feature that some people would look for if I ever want to sell it. If not for that the decission to remove it and keep it out would be easy. The thing has a broken lid, rust holes all in it (it was full of damp leaves when I bought it). To me it just seems like a rust collection spot. Boyink if you are interested in getting rid of them, I may be interested in buying them off of you, worst case for while I am working in the spot under the box. Let me know if you want to get rid of them and what you wand for them...

    Thanks,
    Casey

I know that the toolbox traps water and debris, and many (most? nearly all?) CJs that have them are either rusty inside or have holes in the floors. Still, the box serves a purpose - there's no other place to keep the lug wrench and jack, and every car on the road is expected to have the tools to change a tire. It also makes a nice step for passengers getting into the back seat using the fold-and-tumble passenger seat - otherwise you'd have to step down into the tub before stepping into the back. It's handy for carrying other tools too - although there's no room for a hard toolbox, you can carry wrenches and pliers and such rolled up in a canvas roll (sold at Sears, or get some canvas and make one). I used to carry spare parts like a coil and fuel pump wrapped up in canvas money bags in mine. Still, you have to work hard to keep it dry. All that stuff will hold moisture - no wonder they rust through.

You might want to keep it becasue it's handy.

Heres the seat frame I have. It was just extended by cutting the leg and welding some tubing in. In Dutch this was done to install a Scout underseat heater.

The funny thing is it took me years to figure this out - I knew this piece had been modified, but having never been around another old Jeep I didn't even know what a toolbox was.

Oh...here's a pic of the spare lid I have, should you decide to keep the toolbox:
