I have been talking with the shop owner and he is very reasonable in what he wants for storage ($500).

Just got a call this morning from the owner of the Jeep. He has all the paperwork gathered and wants to meet up to complete the deal tomorrow. I told him he would have to call the shop owner and settle the storage fee before I can get it out of their lot.

He had priced the Jeep to me before he knew he would have to pay this, so I told him I would pay a little more for the Jeep. Looks like the deal is back on.

Same thing may happen to me in the next day or two, and it is also a red CJ5, but I only have about 50 miles to tow it home.

The car trailer I have access to is occupied with my CJ2A which I hauled over to a friend's shop for some welding. I know where I could borrow another but it is a long drive to get it. The Jeep has a tow bar and both driveshafts were sitting in the tub. If the tires look up to it I may flat tow it home which is something I haven't done since I brought home a 3B about 35 years ago. The owner of it said he had put some decent tires on it when he towed it over to the shop, so maybe still okay.

Found a trailer I can use which is very close to where the Jeep is stored, so don't have to worry about old tires flying apart. This Jeep has the F134, and has the PTO driven Ramsey winch. I intend to install a Buick V6, and will be using a Warn winch from the 70s I have in the garage. I prefer a winch that does not rely on a running engine. I will probably just sell or trade the PTO winch setup.

Completed the deal just an hour ago, and will be bringing it home in the next few days. The Jeep was traded in to a used car lot in 1969 and spent a career as a tender on that lot. Shows 39,000 on the odometer. It was used to move cars around and jump them off and such. The F134 is stuck, but it will turn a little, so can probably be freed up with some Marvel Mystery Oil. I am not planning to use that engine, but I will try to get it running before I pull it just to see what kind of shape it is in. Someone might want it.

While it spent more than 40 years in dry storage it has sat out in the weather for a year or two and has some green algae and moss growing on it, so it doesn't look real good right now, but it is very straight and rust free as far as I can tell, and I looked it over pretty good. I will clean it up a little before taking pictures, and hopefully before my wife sees it.

    Tyler,

It may be a little while before I get the PTO setup off the Jeep, but when I do I will give you first refusal since you showed interest in it before anyone else.
Those Ramsey PTO winches are powerful, and this one looks in good shape, but will put some power to it and test it before putting a price on it. It is sort of cool and I would leave it on the Jeep, but I have had a nice condition old Warn 8500 lb winch, sitting in my garage for more than a decade I have been wanting to use on something.

What I don't have, but would like to have, is an overdrive unit, so would certainly consider a good one as a trade, on either of the two winches.

Sometime this Spring I will let you know about it. The winch itself looks real good, even still has some shine on the paint, the exposed cable is a little rusty but that is normal for something this old. Those old winches would pull a Jeep right up a tree if you wanted, I have no idea what the rating is on them.

i'd doubt the strength of the tree before the winches capacity. how much would you want for that setup?

    Tyler,

I haven't decided how much I want for it yet because I haven't tested it. If I can free up the F134 and get it to run before I pull it I can test the winch, if not it will be a while before I can transplant the Buick V6. The Jeep is low miles, and it spent most of it's working career as a tender in a car lot, I doubt the winch was ever used much, and it should work fine.

I spent the first part of the day helping a friend swap rear axles in a Chevy truck, then we went and picked up this Jeep. I am wore out from wrestling those rear ends, I guess I am getting too old for crawling around on the ground and moving heavy objects. So, I didn't do much with the Jeep when I got it home other than remove the top, driver seat and fuel tank, and cleared all the junk out of it. Tomorrow I plan to clean it up some with my pressure washer and maybe a good scrubbing with Comet.

After cleaning out the junk and old rags that were in it I did find some very minimal rust I didn't notice before. There is a small hole in bottom of tool box, and another in the cargo bed, both about the size of a quarter, and the right rear taillight has a cracked lens. The body panels and the rest are all straight and rust free. Has a big push bar and a tow bar on front from it's former career which will be the first stuff I take off of it.

Paid $2800 for it, and it has even less miles than the owner had told me. He said it had 39,000 miles, the odometer shows 33,000. I detected no slop in the steering, but of course I haven't yet driven it, other than while moving it out of the storage lot being pulled by a tractor.

It did follow me home today, but I only got one picture then my phone camera wouldn't work for some reason. I will get my wife to take some pictures tomorrow after I clean her up some (the Jeep, not the wife unless she asks me to). The top that was on it looks like it may be salvageable, the clear plastic windows are still clear and didn't crack, there are not tears or holes in the canvas. There are a lot of moldy looking spots on the clear stuff, but that should clean off. Was what looks to be an original door frame in the back, has a chrome door handle that looks heavier than anything I have ever seen on an aftermarket top kits. Anyone needs it can have it.

i had the same experiance, except pulling it down from a hill, with no brakes besides letting out the clutch. the transmission was in gear, and when i let the clutch out, it didn't stop. going down a hill. thankfully it wasn't very steep. it turned out that the transfer case was in neutral. needless to say, i've learned a lot since then.

This one has no brakes, and the driveshafts are out of it, but lucky me it was all level ground.

Another Picture before cleaning it up.

Both sides are in the same shape. The paint being faded on the front end was from it's working life when it was kept under a shed that didn't completely cover it, but I am going to repaint it anyway, probably the original color. I have the original wheels but the tires were completely rotten, so we put these on just to get it rolling. Perfectly straight body, except for one small dent on the driver side rear.

I am real excited about this project, it will be the easiest one I have ever done. I have a big batch of them, so it will get 11" drum brakes all four corners, and I scored a Herm's dual MC kit from the classifieds on this forum for $100. I plan to split the E-brakes on the rear to separate levers, for what we used to call a "poor man's locker". Now, if I can only find a good deal on an overdrive.

I hate to say something that sounds so much younger than my years, but this is one "sweet" Jeep!

Between it and the other 67 CJ5 I have I will be able to build a real nice Jeep.

I have a roll bar that came with the other 67, the kind that just bolts to the top of the wheel houses, not sufficient for a hard roll but they are better than nothing and a good place to anchor 3 point seat belts. I won't be doing any rock crawling with this Jeep, just driving it on fishing trips and such. It has factory lap belts but having tested lap belts in a roll over of a VW Beetle years ago caused me to appreciate the shoulder belt restraints more.

Mostly unmolested but the dash on this Jeep has been modified with four extra gauges and a radio speaker, at least they didn't hack a hole for the radio which is mounted under the dash. The extra gauges are junky stuff, so I will probably use the uncut dash panel from the other Jeep and just have the stock cluster.

Got the engine to free up. Put some Marvel oil in it last week and let it sit, and was able to turn it over this morning!

If mr. Vaughan doesn't end up wanting the winch setup, I'm going to put my name in the hat for it. :)

    Congrats on your new jeep!

I plan to attempt to start the engine towards the end of the week. Will know more about the winch once I have the Jeep running. I haven't decided whether to use the PTO winch, or a vintage Warn I have in the garage, either one are the right vintage for an old Jeep.

After sitting with Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders for a week I changed the oil, put a battery to it and turned it over a bit with the plugs out to purge most of that oil and to get some oil pressure.

Today I put a set of plugs in it and tried to start it. First try no spark, put in new points, condenser, rotor and cap. Second try it fired up and ran a bit on the gas I poured down it's throat.

It doesn't have a gas tank in it, so for the third trial I just filled the bowl of the carb, and primed it. Ran it this way three bowls worth. It smoked like a steam locomotive until it burned off the Marvel oil, but before the second bowl emptied it started to even out, smoked a lot less, and on the third bowl it actually ran pretty good for first run in 42 years.

I detected no knocking or other strange noises, it does stutter some on acceleration but so would I after sitting that long. I think cleaning the carb and putting a kit in it may just put it right.

I am going to rebuild the carb this weekend, then hook up a boat gas tank to it so I can run it long enough to do some tuning.

New gas tank, fuel lines and a kit for the pump are ordered.
