Has anyone ever experienced a oil leak after changing out the stock valve covers for a pair of the chrome aftermarket ones. I know i did the gaskets correctly but for some reason no matter how hard i torque down the bolts i still have a slight drip... normally i wouln't be too concerned except for the fact that the oil happens to be falling into the lower connection of the exhaust manifold and exhaust which i believe is causing the back firing.
Anyone have an idea or suggestion?

Over tightening - especially on the thick valve cover gaskets - can be just as bad as not tightening enough.

My suggestion - get another set of gaskets and install them. Torque to the manufacturer spec's.

I wouldn't think that would cause back firing. I'll bet it stinks though. ;)

Oil dripping on the exhaust cannot cause a backfire. i would check the valve cover and make sure the mating surface is flat. Alot of aftermarket stugg is made out of thinner metal than stock causing it to bend easily. Backfiring is a seperate animal unless yopu have something bound up under the valve cover.

Overtightening will also make the gasket squirt out from between the cover and the head. I'd check the flatness of the new cover with a straightedge, and then glue the new gasket into the cover with a thin layer of silicone or gasket cement, and let it dry. Then use a little silicone on the exposed gasket surface, lightly oil the sealing surface on the head, and just cinch it down till the silicone oozes out. I prefer the rubber gaskets (FelPro or dealer), but I've always used the stamped steel covers.

Backfire through the exhaust or through the carburetor? Is this backfiring a popping when you decelerate or a load bang?

i agree with timgr i always use rubber gasket they worth the price and i like to put some {make a gasket} silicone on both sides usually i under tight it a little bit and leave it there for some hours and than tight it to the good tork it make it almpst always good. for the back fire it can be cause by an unlocked valve or maybe if u had turn the distributor by mistake than the timming had change anyway have a good check big al

Well, i changed the gaskets again and the back firing continues. The popping noise is only when i accelerate, it rarely if ever happens when i let off the gas. This load bang you're talking about interests me because it seems to only happen when i want to climb a hill or accelerate with any force.

Any ideas on how to remedy this problem, any assistance will be greatly appreciated. :?

    Ok, here's the story:
So i got done playing billards with a couple of buddies and after the night was over and i was about to leave, another friend of mine, Ron came out and said
"hey, jared you're jeep ain't running right. Sounds like it's only running on 6 cylinders."
"yeah, i know it sounds F***ed up doesn't it" i replied.
"Bring it into the light and open the hood... you sure you got all the wires right because a buddy of mine a long time ago swapped two wires on a super bee i had and i had a similar problem until i confronted him and he fessed up to playing the prank.
Sure enough i pointed out the only two wires i got careless with and may have errored with when labeling. I swapped them and oh my i just about needed a new pair of underwear :D. Blue73 ROARS AGAIN!! Finally i don't have to hang in the slow lane with the toyoduhs! R)
I'm so glad that this forum is here, without discussing these problems i would have a much harder time figuring out these things.
Oh and regarding the oil leak... large piece of old gasket still on the head beneath the new one i had put in a week ago... I guess that 's what i get for rushing.
    :stout: Cheers!
