The B3 3b Attempt

As previously said, use brass nuts. Anti-sieze should also be used.

 

Yeah, I most likely mis remembered! Brass would be stronger.

Installed the exhaust manifold today. Had it ground flat at the local machine shop first. 60 bucks I didn't want to spend. But, it needed it IMO. Installed the studs into the head, slid the RemFlex gasket on and torqued the brass nuts to the 20 lb/ft recommendation on the RemFlex package. Used my beam style torque wrench. We'll see if it seals up at this torque value someday in the future. Might have to go a little more but for now, on to other things with this engine. Just maintenance type stuff and plugging the heater hose ports. Heaters are just unneccesary weight.

Then, flywheel resurface, find the right clutch and start trying to get the T18 on the back of this pig. I'm assuming the 225 bell housing I modified for the T18 will work on the 350. The clutch that came with the 350 is 11". So, I need to find an 11" clutch with the correct spline and shaft diameter to match the Ford T18.

I have everything gathered up, except the clutch stuff, to bolt the T18 to an odd fire as that was the original plan. Hoping all that stuff goes onto the 350. Pilot bushing, bell, etc., etc.

Pilot bushing, bellhousing, motor mounts are all the same as the 225. It's just a little taller and sitcks a lot further forward.

Not sure I'm crazy about this RemFlex gasket. I'm gonna study it a bit more. And wondering if I should have gone with taller brass nuts rather than the standard height from McMaster. They did not offer the taller ones. I might be backing here.

 

Not a lot going on with this. Tons of other projects taking precedent. I did manage to get one of the two tail light panels that I made tacked into place yesterday. This body is so twisted up. But, it will do for a beater.

I also replaced the thermostat and that pesky little bypass hose at the thermostat housing while engine is on the stand.

Looking forward, I'll soon order a new clutch and get the flywheel resurfaced. Then I'll bring the t18 down from the house garage and attach it. I gotta figure out how I'm going to suspend or hold all this as I assemble it. I hate to just it leave it hanging from the engine hoist because it will take me a while.

I think I'll be rebuilding another transfer case for it as the one I have done is slated for the '71 with 4.88 gears. I think I have the right have speedo gears inside for my axle ratio and tire height.......from info found here years ago and the help of forum members.

I should probably try to figure out the correct speedo gears for the 5.38s and 33-35 inch tires for this project.

Anyhow, I'll check back in a while if I get anything else done.

A bit of catching up. The one tail light panel, or partial tail light panel I tacked in the other week. No further progress to report on this but, I'll soon be making headway on it. I spliced it in where the wheel house is welded to the tub. I can't bend the top edge of the panel and I'm not buying repair panels so this is what we get. Remember.....beater on the cheap. Recessed plastic tail lights in a rubber grommet from Grote will go in just like on the '71. They have been trouble free and dependable for many years now and they are dirt cheap.

And then here is the coil that came on the engine. MSD Blaster but it says it's for electronic ignitions. Not sure if you can read it in the crappy picture. Wouldn't this be hard on standard ignition parts or something? Maybe someone can explain it to me....how it would or would not be bad for the rest of the system. In any case, I think I'll replace it with a standard type 12v internally resisted coil. I put on a new one on the B while trying to get the 225 running. But with the quality of new parts maybe I'd be better off to stick with this thing. The engine ran with it on there.......at least long enough for me to get suckered into buying it.

Got the tail light panels all but completely welded in. This body is so twisted up it's not funny. Well, okay, yea it IS funny.

Also plugged up the heater hose ports on the engine and water pump.

My old school picture posting system is dying. I'll have to figure something else out. Until then, sorry.

 

Well, I pushed this jeep out the door last weekend. Turned it around and pushed it back in. Getting ready to yank the 225. I knew this would happen.......the more I look at this wreck the more I am considering starting fresh with another frame. A PO hacked the front frame horns off vertical in line with the front of the spring hangers and then welded in.....really really welded in.... a hefty walled hunk of box steel. I'm going to play hell getting that thing out of there and then have to rebuild the front frame horns and hack it all up to mount a winch and the saginaw steering. And he gotsda hefty hunk of angle welded to the back end which I could probably deal with but why. It's just seeming more and more sensible to start fresh with another platform. I have one sitting outside.

 

Not much change here. Engine is getting lighter as I sell off the pieces. Got the Dana 18 out and on the floor. It's a candidate for rebuild and reinstall along with another I dragged down to the garage to check out. Eenie meenie minee mo, don't drop a transfer case on your toe.

Gonna drop the transmission then yank the motor with my new engine lifting plate. Anxious to try it out. Then I have to decide if I'm going to use this frame or not.

 

Out with the old. And it's a good thing, too. Everything under the passenger side valve cover is all rusted up. Cam looks totally spent.

James, I'll get you some shots of the oil pan later this week.

Garage is a freakin' mess. Tools strewn about everywhere. I need an evening to clean up.

I guess the column comes out next and then off with the tub. This is turning into more than I wanted to get into. Go figure.

I was nosing around under the hood of that thing a few years ago and you shooed me off.

 

I was probably embarrassed that I couldn't it to run. Certainly no gems hiding under that hood.

 

Not much to add here. Got the 225 out of my way once and for all yesterday. With floor space available again I slid the T14 out from under the jeep and stashed that in the barn and the Dana 18 was set aside for rebuild.

Got side tracked for a couple hours working on my truck and a PTO unit but then turned back to B and yanked the seats out of it and clipped off the brake lines. Gotta pull the steering off and then drag the steaming pile outside and pull the tub off. I'll then make a final decision about using this frame or another.
