Yes the bottom sliding gear engages reverse

Syncro ring and blocking ring would be the same but typically "Syncro" refers to the assembly from blocking ring to blocking ring.

The brass blocking ring should have some wiggle to it when you push the sliding collar to the opposite side but not much.

20°F is pretty cold for assembly lube. I think the first thing to do would be to warm it up and see if it is better. With it cold I doubt it will behave normally by hand. Have you shifted a cold truck at 20°F?

I brought it inside and did some more turning and poking this morning. It appears that the blocking ring to fourth gear so the closest one to the input shaft is holding onto the input shaft and not letting it spin. Making it always feel like it is in fourth gear I am thinking that is why if I shift it by hand into 1st or second it binds up and wont turn.... I tried the screwdriver trick pulling it away from the input and turning it slightly but it doesnt have alot of wiggle. I was thinking of dripping some gl4 gear oil on it to let it wear in there. Also wondering if I installed a wrong bearing in the front I was reading the early models should be .63 thick and they also have later ones that are .83 wide. It looks like it has all the right clearances though...

Loosen the front retainer 1/2 turn on each bolt and see if that loosens up the ring enough to wiggle it then if it is still tight back off another 1/4 turn. Or if it did free up go in 1/4 turn on each bolt. There's some math you can do to figure. 020 on each bolt but a quality beer box will suffice.

the rear gasket sets the end play if i recall correctly. the gasket supplied with the adaptor was way too thin, sourced one from the flaps that was right.

Thanks to all of you guys for responding! Last night I loosened up the front bearing retainer and it was spinning in neutral no problem snugged them back down and still no issue. I went through all the gears to check function and we are good. Shout out to Metalshaperjeep on youtube his videos on how to rebuild this trans and use the novak adapter for the dana 18 were spot on! Going to quote a good friend of mine in town that has been helping with my jeep project.

    "Keep building those Jeeps!"
