    Man, I got chewed out by the guys on here for not having the Jeep on jackstands when I wasn't even working under it....if someone doesn't give you a hard time I'll be sorely disappointed!

    To conflate these two statements:
    The full floating (semi actually) axle uses an oil "well" out in the hub to keep the bearings bathed. This requires the axle be jacked in either direction after servicing to insure the cavity is full. Once the hub has oil, the bearings will operate as they should.

    That being said, there is no "well" in a standard greased bearing axle. there is no way to maintain lube at the bearing while driving short of way overfilling the diff to insure the oil level is high enough to keep the bearings bathed.

    I did not know that. This was around 1988 and just wanted to get back on the road. Puts a whole new perspective on trying to make that work
    with any kind of anticipation for longevity.

    Planned on working on the axle today, but the wife wanted me to take her somewhere. Said we'd be back around 1, ...... got home at 430. But I still got the axle on the table.

    not much today, took the diff cover off for oil to drain, took the axle bolts off, but couldn't find the axle puller, ..... sigh, well :poo:

    x2, exactly. this is how we always filed the hub bearings on heavy trucks imiedentally after servicing. Also we packed the wheel bearings with regular wheel bearing grease on install to make sure they got lubed well enough until the gear oil could fill the hubs. Also oil bath hub seals are usually a higher quality seal than seals designed to seal grease only hub and brgs. The oil bath seals are often a two piece design.

    More Questions Than Answers, ......

    1st, the inner axle seals, aren't there., thats ok I was going to delete them anyway. but did P.O. just not put them in??
    And Yes there are seals in the other end.

    2nd when I removed the carrier, the pass side bearing just slid right off, looks like someone forgot their setup bearing.

    3rd I removed the pinion shaft, ???? no crush sleeve, just shims,

    so, do I just put it back the way it was, or install a new crush sleeve.:susp:

    I think so, when I call back, they transferred me to AtoZ customer service, and they are sending a replacement. We'll see how it goes.

    There are no inner axle seals on the rear axle. The oil seal is out by the axle bearings.

    If the gearing slid off the carrier, then either a bearing has spun and wore down the journal or the bearing is too large for the carrier.

    While there is a crush sleeve elimination kit, yours looks like someone built a spacer out of a lock washer. If the spacer is solid and you can set the preload with the shims, then reinstalling that system is fine. If you don't think it is solid, then shifting back to a crush sleeve may be a better bet.

    Addendum:
    I prefer crush sleeve elimination kits. They never "relax", make setting the pinion preload easier, and unlike sleeves, are reusable.

    Well the Amazon fiasco continues , today I received my replacement locker. ….. Eaton p/n TT70P53080 no-slip locker, not the tru trac I wanted. So I’ll return and reorder , …. Again. :censored:
