I'm no longer 16 and the grumbly side pipes on my jeep aren't as cool as they used to be. As my primary use is at the hunting camp, I'm ready to make my exhaust system as silent as possible. My question to the gurus is - do I just go to a muffler shop and say 'make it quieter', or is there more I can do to really silence it? Are there special mufflers I can order ahead and take to the shop that outperform whatever they would supply? And what about those little "silencer" tips that can attach to the end of the pipe, do those things actually work?

What mufflers are you currently running? Obviously the quietest option would be to put a stock exhaust back on. I have dual exhaust on my CJ7 and I'm running thrush turbo mufflers. Its quiet but has a good sound still. Flowmasters sound good as well. Tons of options out there.

It's been so long since I went to this system I don't remember what I'm running on there right now. The muffler shop's plan is to go back to stock, which I'm good with, just wondering if I can go even better with some sort of quiet upgrade to stock.

I dont think you need to above and beyond. But if you get some kind of oem muffler from anything at the junk yard that will fit in your space it will be a better muffler than anything aftermarket. Route it out the back corner.

    I take it you have a Dauntless cj-5 ?
I happen to have an OEM NOS Dauntless Jeep muffler for sale here : http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?threads/157610/
Beyond that I know of one trick that should help if you run dual exhaust system.
That is to connect the dual exhaust via a crossover pipe. Use an “H” crossover pipe for low rpm torque or use a “Y” crossover pipe for high rpm HP.

I've found my vehicles run much better if I turn down my hearing aids.

I run a single Cherry Bomb Turbo behind my Oddfire. I think it does a good job keeping it mellow.

X2 on turning down the hearing aids, makes everything quieter. My wife however has super hearing, and is always mentioning the noises a vehicle makes.

I like to hear the engine, but also don't like the loud rumble as much as I did when I was a youngster with hot rods.

Iv been through 4 or 5 mufflers over the years. They all rust out eventually. Always used the factory style crossover pipe over the skid plate into 1 on the driver side. At first I had it split at the rear straight out. It looked the best but the fumes were always making their way in. I tried a cherry bomb once. That came off right away. It sounded like a broken tractor. Now im running a normal muffler and ran the pipe over the frame out the driver side corner.

Thank you, I hadn't heard of the H pipe config but sounds like what I'd want. I do currently have the dual exhaust

Best system would be a set of stock manifolds off an auto application run under the body with a single outlet at the rear. The manifolds are getting hard to find and you would need to build a custom system from there on back. This may not work if you are running the stock Ross steering.

Next would be a stock manifold system. You would again have to run a custom system to the rear or find a used one to bolt on.

With headers, especially fender well headers, you can wrap the tubes and install a set of turbo or other baffled mufflers which will be much quieter than glass packs. If you have in frame headers, you can reroute the system to dump out the rear.

On rear dump applications, I like to put a break in the system, usually in the area of the crossmember, which makes removing the transmission/t case easier.

Is this a stock motor or has it been warmed up a little?
I'ld focus on the exit location and tailpipe angle, and keeping it well sealed. get a stainless oem style muffler with a tailpipe out the rear corner away from the driver and maybe a 2nd muffler under the floor. Manifolds help but nothing is a cure.

If you can find the stock manifolds, a custom system may not be necessary.
Some members here, including myself, have used this Waldron aftermarket system.
The crossover pipe is forward of the transmission, so it does not interfere with transfer case nor transmission removal if needed.

Yes the "H" crossover does indeed work and it also seems to abate the noise a bit. The problem with those is where to put them in an early Jeep. I ran one between the collecters on the Hooker headers in my 3B for a couple of decades and it was positioned right in front of the cross member and somewhat protected by the skid plate. But it made it a pain in the posterior to work on stuff and it wasn't replaced when I installed new headers.

Well at the end of the day I'd say the muffler shop did a good job. I would have preferred an H pipe but they went with a Y, but the route and everything turned out good. It's a lot quieter, still a soft grumble but I'm good with it. Indeed the "new" noises have shown up right on que.. right off the bat I can hear a manifold leak :). Thanks for all the input.
